David Warner admits that he is not being liked in England

David Warner says he is getting along well with Root now

Australian batsman David Warner, admitting that he was to blame for the altercation with England player Joe Root in a bar during Champions Trophy tournament in England, said that he could understand why England fans booed him.

“Obviously it was all my fault, I accept that and I have to keep embracing it. Someone does get picked out and this time it’s me. I’ve got to keep my head down and focus on what my task ahead is and that’s scoring runs.”

When asked about how he was greeted by Root as he walked out to bat, Warner said: “He said to me, ‘It’s been a long couple of months, hasn’t it?’ and I just turned around and had a little smile. I’ve got a long memory.”

Incidentally Root also took the catch to dismiss Warner in the second innings of the Test match. Reacting to it, he said: “Yeah, hooked another one to Rooty. Out of all the people in the field – it was quite comical. I’ll probably read it on Twitter a bit later.”

Warner, after being banned for six weeks by Cricket Australia for his misbehaviour, was picked in the third Ashes Test. He was booed by the England fans while fielding near the boundary line and the Barmy Army trumpeter Billy Cooper even played out a theme song developed especially for him.

On being treated that way, Warner said to The Guardian: “I actually liked the trumpeter playing the Rocky theme song, it was actually entertaining. I had a little chuckle.

“It’s not everyday you walk out on the field and you get booed. You’ve just got to embrace it, know what your job is ahead of you, and that’s all I can concentrate on.”

He added: “I’m not well liked at the moment but this morning was actually quite entertaining down there on the boundary. There was a few hungover people and a few voices that weren’t speaking what their minds were yesterday afternoon, which was fortunate. Come tomorrow when I’m out on the boundary and they’re full again I think I might cop it.”
