DDCA names gate after Virender Sehwag, commits huge blunder
What's the story?
Gate 2 at the Feroz Shah Kotla was renamed after Virender Sehwag by Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA)by on the eve of the first T20I between India and New Zealand. However, they also committed a mistake while recounting the list of statistical achievements by the Indian opener in Tests.
Among the achievements. there is one that reads "only Indian to score a triple hundred in Test cricket", which is factually incorrect as Karun Nair, who has played for and captained the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, joined Sehwag when he scored a triple century against England in December 2016.
In case you didn't know...
During the final Test between India and England in December 2016 held in Chennai, Karun Nair scored an unbeaten triple century and helped India beat England by an innings. The Karnataka batsman came into the game as an injury replacement and despite scoring a triple ton was dropped for India's next Test and since then the 25-year-old has struggled to keep his place in the Indian Test side.
The heart of the matter
The former Indian opener was present at the ground where a small function was held to commemorate the gate being renamed after him at the Kotla. Speaking at the event, Sehwag told the media that it was a huge honor and added that it will serve as a motivation to youngsters.
“Any young cricketer will get motivated reading the name. Virender Sehwag played here as a kid and when he left there is a gate named after him so if I can also play for U19, U16, U23 or Ranji for Delhi and then represent India, then a gate, stand or something will be after my name,” he said.
What's next?
One hopes that the DDCA recognizes that they have committed a mistake and take action to ensure that the statement mentioned at the gate is corrected ahead of the first T20I between India and New Zealand, which will take place at the venue on November 1 (Wednesday).
Author's take
While the move to rename a gate after Sehwag, who is one of the finest cricketers that Delhi have ever produced was noble, DDCA should have taken more care while verifying what was being printed on the gate. To not recognize Nair's triple ton against England, which came just last year, when he has captained Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League, is a huge blunder. Hopefully, the DDCA can rectify the mistake before long and just a minor change in the statement "to score two triple hundreds" would be enough.
