Delhi court drops charges against Sreesanth, Chandila and Chavan
The Delhi High Court has today dropped all charges against the three former Rajasthan Royals cricketers Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, Firstpost has reported. All three players were arrested in May 2013 when the IPL spot-fixing scandal first broke during the 6th edition of the tournament.
Since there was no concrete evidence, the entire case has now been dropped. There were totally 42 people who were accused (out of which six are still missing) and all of them have been discharged.
The Delhi police initially conducted raids and arrested these three players and pressed charges using the telephonic conversations they had with the bookies. But the advocates representing the accused had defended them by claiming there wasn’t enough prima facie evidence.
It will be interesting to see how the BCCI react to this development as they had already handed out life bans to Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan. Just a few days ago, a supreme court appointed panel suspended two IPL franchisees Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings due to betting. Also, the team owners Gurunath Meiyappan (Chennai) and Raj Kundra (Rajasthan) were banned for life from cricketing activities.
S. Sreesanth: I have no regrets and no complaints against anybody. God-willing, I will return to cricket.
