Delhi Daredevils annihilate Chennai Super Kings

If the first match of IPL season 5 was an aberration for the Chennai Super Kings, then today was no better as they were outclassed yet again. Once the storm cleared and the match started on time, CSK, having been put in to bat, could only manage 110 runs in their 20 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. Delhi chased down the target with 8 wickets in hand and 40 balls remaining.

Sehwag, having won the toss, decided to put the opposition in and the decision immediately paid off. CSK got off to the worst start imaginable as Murali Vijay was run out the very first ball after a confusion with Faf du Plessis.  The Chennai batsmen never did find their rhythm and were kept quiet thanks to some good pace bowling by the Delhi bowlers.

The showers helped the bowlers as the new ball swung and nipped around causing trouble to the batsmen. Whenever Chennai got a partnership going, Delhi made sure it was broken; they were assisted in this regard by some very poor running between the wickets which cost Raina and Badrinath their wickets. Chennai somehow managed to stutter to 110 runs in their 20 overs, setting Delhi a very easy target. Chennai’s innings consisted of 4 run outs.

With the required run rate below a run a ball, Delhi were firm favorites at the innings break. And they started their innings off in grand style too, with Naman Ohja hitting the first three balls for consecutive boundaries.  Skipper Sehwag finally found his form and blasted his way to 33 off just 21 balls before an ill-timed shot over square-leg saw the end of him.

Delhi’s new recruits Mahela Jayawardene and Kevin Pietersen saw the team through, adding an unbeaten 51 runs for the third wicket. Pietersen continued from where he left off in Sri Lanka and his undefeated innings of 43 from 26 balls consisted of three fours and two monster sixes.

Delhi Daredevils, with the addition of their overseas stars, suddenly look like a team to reckon with while CSK must once again get off the floor and dust themselves off.  Today’s match was a one-sided affair with the home team dominating in every department.

Delhi Daredevils: 111 for 2 (13.2 Overs)
