Dhoni masterclass downs Sunrisers in last-ball thriller

MS Dhoni, in action here for India

An incredible display of hitting from MS Dhoni saw Rising Pune Supergiant to a remarkable six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad from the final ball.

The game looked lost for Pune as they required 47 from the final three overs, but Dhoni crashed a remarkable half-century including a boundary from the last delivery when two runs were needed.

Rahul Tripathi scored his maiden IPL fifty for the hosts as he collected six fours and three sixes before he was run out on 59, but no other batsman could make a similar impact as the required rate continued to climb.

That was until Dhoni sprung into top gear, moving from 25 off 22 balls to his fifty with just seven more deliveries as he finished unbeaten on 61 from 34.

Earlier, Moises Henriques struck six fours and two sixes in his 28-ball 55, while captain David Warner reclaimed the orange cap with a circumspect 43 from 40 as Sunrisers piled on 62 runs in the last five overs to reach 176-3.

Henriques brought his fifty up off 26 deliveries as he and Deepak Hooda (19) shared an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of 47 in just 21 balls.

In response, Pune lost Ajinkya Rahane early but rebuilt well through Tripathi and captain Steve Smith, before the latter played on off the bowling of Rashid Khan for 27 to leave the hosts needing 10 an over to lift themselves off the foot of the table.

Rashid then put the stranglehold on Pune, with his superb four-over spell of 1-17 coupled with the brilliant run out of Tripathi off his own bowling.

But Dhoni, ably supported by Manoj Tiwary (17 not out), saw his side home with another masterclass in finishing as he struck five fours and three sixes, two of those boundaries coming in Siddarth Kaul's final over to cap a stunning turnaround.
