England inflict innings defeat on Australia to regain Ashes

Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes proved too hot to handle for Australia

England won the fourth Ashes test at Trent Bridge by an innings and 78 runs to gain an unassailable 3-1 lead and thus regain the Ashes. The hosts picked up the remaining three wickets in Australia’s second innings in quick time early on Day 3 to finish off their resistance.

In a match which ran a little over two days, the result was a foregone conclusion after Australia’s horrendous start on Day one. Stuart Broad stepped up in the absence of the injured James Anderson and bowled a dream spell picking up eight wickets, which included 5 in just 19 balls.

Australia were skittled out for just 60 runs and in further embarrassment to the visitors, ‘extras’ contributed the highest at 14. None apart from Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson managed to cross double figuresEngland were determined to grab hold of the opportunity with Joe Root continuing his rich vein of form with a knock of 130 and found good support in Bairstow.
