England ahead in 1st session of Ashes Test

Brisbane, Nov 21 (IANS) The dismissal of Australia’s Shane Watson in the final over before lunch on the opening day of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba here Thursday has ensured the first session ended with England slightly ahead.

Watson was caught at second slip by Graeme Swann for 22, an unsatisfactory end to Australia’s first session, reports Xinhua.

Opener David Warner looked to have put Australia into a position of dominance, hitting the new ball with a combination of flair and poise but pacer Stuart Broad struck at the stroke of the lunch to leave Australia at 71/2.

Warner played an impressive 42 from 68 balls, leading Australia to the break with captain Michael Clarke yet to get off the mark at the other end from three balls.

Broad earlier had Chris Rogers caught in the gully by Ian Bell for just one run.
