England v Sri Lanka, 1st ODI: Stats - Woakes' brilliance hands England a tie against Sri Lanka

Woakes’ knock of 95* helped England tie a thrilling match against Sri Lanka

The first ODI between England and Sri Lanka ended in the most thrilling finish as the match ended in a tie thanks to a last-ball six by Liam Plunkett. Angelo Mathews and Seekkuge Prasanna played vital knocks for Sri Lanka to help them post a total that was probably below par on a good batting track.

In reply, Sri Lanka bowled very well to put England on the backfoot. However, some excellent batting from Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes gave them a chance at winning the match. Needing 14 off the last over, some terrible fielding and bowling allowed the match to slip away from Sri Lanka's hands and gave England an unlikely tie.

Here are the major stats from the game:

1 – Seekkuge Prasanna is the first Sri Lankan batsman to score two fifties in less than 25 balls. Only Brendon McCullum has scored two fifties in less than 25 balls in consecutive ODI games.

2 – Seekkuge Prasanna's 24-ball fifty against England was the second fastest fifty scored in ODIs against England. Thisara Perera scored a 23-ball fifty against England in 2014.

2 – Jos Buttler has been out in the nineties twice in ODIs. Before this score of 93, Buttler was out for 99 against West Indies in 2013/14.

2 – This was only the second time that Joe Root has been dismissed for a single digit score in three consecutive innings in international cricket. The last time he did was in November 2015 against Pakistan.

3 – Liam Plunkett is the third player to hit a six and tie an ODI. The other two players are Asif Mujtaba against Australia in 1992/93 and Michael Rippon against Ireland in 2013.

73 – Angelo Mathews’ knock against England was his highest ODI score in England. It is his third fifty in 15 games in England.

94.91 – The percentage of runs scored by Prasanna via boundaries in his knock. 56 out of the 59 runs he scored came from boundaries. This is the joint fourth-highest for any batsman in ODIs.

95* – Chris Woakes knock of 95 off 92 balls is the highest ever for a Number 8 batsman in ODIs. Woakes beat Thomas Odoyo's 84 against Bangladesh in 1996.

138 – The seventh-wicket partnership between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes is the second highest for the wicket in ODIs. The highest was 177 between Buttler and Adil Rashid against New Zealand in 2015.

286 – This was the fourth highest score at which an ODI was tied. The highest was 340 between New Zealand and England in 2008.

286/9 – The score made by Sri Lanka was highest they scored in ODIs at Trent Bridge and the eighth highest in England.
