England vs New Zealand: Daniel Vettori fit for first ODI

Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand captain, is fit for first ODI at Lord’s. Daniel Vettori arrived in England as replacement for Bruce Martin for second Test but he didn’t play due to fitness issues.

However, he is expected to play the first ODI at Lord’s. He hasn’t played cricket for six months but New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has backed Vettori to perform in the shorter-format of the game. “The veteran spinner’s okay to play the shorter version of the game after a top effort with both ball and bat in a warm up game at Northampton.

“He manoeuvred the ball nicely as he does. With the ball he had no ill effects, got through the day quite nicely with the ball, as did all the bowlers so we’re very pleased with them.”

Luke Ronchi is expected to take the gloves from Brendon McCullum and will open the batting with Martin Guptill. Also, Doug Bracewell is likely to be slotted in as third seamer in the absence of Trent Boult.

The first ODI is scheduled at Lord’s tomorrow.
