Four injured in power transformer blast outside Gaddafi stadium during Pakistan-Zimbabwe match

Pakistan vs Zimbabwe match onoing at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore

At least four persons, including two policemen, were injured in a blast at Kalima Chowk outside the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where a day-night match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was ongoing. The blast took place at 9 PM. The four injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where their condition was declared to be out of danger.

Midway through the Pakistan innings, there was a loud noise, audible to those in the ground and also in the enclosed press box.

The Pakistan Cricket Board immediately issued a statement, saying it was a ‘power transformer blast’ that had been caused because of malfunctioning. The release also said that a couple of policemen had been injured in the mishap.

A Rescue 1122 official told PTI that at least four people had been injured in the blast, not confirming the nature of the blast. "We have shifted the injured to hospital. About the nature of the blast, the police will better tell you," he said.

Inside the stadium, Pakistan won the match by 6 wickets, in the process claiming their first ODI series win after December 2013.

Punjab Police claim to have extraordinary security measures to avoid any untoward incident on Zimbabwe’s tour of Pakistan, the first international tour hosted in Pakistan after the attack on the Sri Lankan Cricket Team by Taliban in March 2009. That incident had occurred in Lahore's Liberty Chowk, also near Gaddafi Stadium, and had left six members of the visiting team injured.

The Nishtar sports complex, which also houses the Gaddafi stadium, is under surveillance through a system of closed-circuit security cameras and public entry for the games is on foot through extensive security layers.
