Will CSK survive?

Two options have been finalised by the Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council to decide on the future of former two former IPL champions team - Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), reports ESPNcricinfo.

Either invite bids for the two new teams for next two years or start preparing for the ten-team IPL from 2018 by giving fresh tenders to the two new teams for ten years. These options will be kept in front of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) working committee today.

The BCCI formed the working group to study the Lodha panel's verdict relating to the IPL 2013 corruption scandal and summoned it to present its findings in six weeks. The group comprises of IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur, BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry and IPL governing council member Sourav Ganguly, and were assisted by the board's legal counsel, Ushanath Banerjee.

Earlier, the Madras High Court rejected CSK's petition to put stay on their two-year suspension from IPL. The two-judge bench comprising of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam refused to give any relief to the CSK’s owner Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd. and adjourned the case to September 23.

The court while refusing the petition, also made it a point to state that any decision taken by BCCI in the meantime will be counted as the final court order.

In a landmark verdict on July 14, 2015, the Justice RM Lodha committee suspended Chennai's franchise CSK and Jaipur's franchise RR for a period of two years from the IPL.

Gurunath Meiyappan, a former team official of the CSK franchise, and Raj Kundra, a former co-owner of the RR, were also banned by the RM Lodha Panel from any future involvement in the cricket matches for life.
