Gautam Gambhir fined 70 percent match fees, Manoj Tiwary claims Gambhir passed racist comments
BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur stressed that incidents like the showdown between Gautam Gambhir and Manoj Tiwary in a Ranji Trophy match should not take place in the future. Corrective measures were also promised and Gambhir and Tiwary were fined 70 and 40 percent of their match fees.
"Incidents like this should not take place in any sports. Each and every player playing the game should avoid indulging in such kind of acts. I had a word with game officials and asked them to look into the details of the incident," said Thakur as he watched the match from the sidelines.
Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir got into an altercation with his Bengal counterpart Manoj Tiwary during their Ranji match on Saturday. Gambhir, who was fielding in the slip cordon, thought Tiwary was just trying to waste time. He got frustrated by the act and said, “Shaam ko mil tujhe maroonga (Meet me in the evening, I will hit you).
Tiwary replied: “Shaam kya abhi bahar chal’ (Why wait till evening, let’s go out and settle it now”).
Gambhir raised his fist in Tiwary's direction and the latter didn’t back down. The umpire came in between, but he was pushed away by Gambhir. Manoj then shouted at Gambhir saying, “Did I tell you anything, why did you come in between.”
Tiwary claims Gambhir made racist comments
Tiwary on Sunday claimed that Gambhir made racist remarks about former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and Bengalis.
"He made racist remarks made about Sourav Ganguly and Bengalis. I spoke to Sourav Ganguly and he is very upset that his name has been dragged in the matter. We will never accept anything against Sourav Ganguly," Tiwary said.
Tiwary went on to add that he doesn’t mind sledging but comments aimed at someone’s mother were not acceptable, "I don't mind sledging but abusing someone's mother is not right," Tiwary said.
The Bengal cricketer also said that Gambhir wasn’t saying the truth and that is why he was fined more than him "Gautam Gambhir is not saying the truth. If I had done what Gambhir is saying why have I been fined 40 percent and him 70 percent."
