All-rounder Glenn Maxwell has become the first Australian player to score 95 or more runs and take at least 4 wickets in an One Day International (ODI) match. Playing the final of the Carlton Mid ODI tri-series, against England at Perth today, Maxwell helped the home team recover from a precarious position after being inserted into bat first and then ran through the lower middle order to help his team romp home by a huge margin of 112 runs.
Australia were jolted by early blows from England seamers led by James Anderson, which reduced them to 60/4 in 17.4 overs. Maxwell, who had come in at No.5, then, combined with Mitchell Marsh to put together a 141-run partnership for the 5th wicket in 140 deliveries to take the team to 201 in 41 overs; the 26-year-old was finally dismissed caught behind while attempting a wild swipe off a short ball from Stuart Broad.
The dismissal sparked a mini-collapse, but James Faulkner’s stunning 24-ball cameo that yielded 50 runs made sure Australia were able to set a winning target of 279 on the board. In reply, England never got going, losing wickets at regular intervals. Maxwell, with his off-spin, ended up with bowling figures of 9-0-46-4, picking up the wickets of Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad.
Including Maxwell, only 13 players have achieved the feat of scoring 95 or more runs and taking at least 4 wickets in an ODI in the history of the game. Given below is the complete list:
