Graeme Smith likely to return in October

Graeme Smith, the South Africa Test captain, is likely to return for the home series against Pakistan in October.

Smith injured his ankle and was ruled out of cricket for five months.

At that point of time, he was playing for Surrey and had to leave England for surgery. He was also ruled out of the Champions Trophy and will now miss the tour of Sri Lanka.

South Africa’s team manager and doctor Mohammed Moosajee said: “Smith has made steady progress and the management is aiming to have him for the Pakistan series.”

“He has three months to go and we will have to take a call closer to the time but we are hopeful he will be able to play in that series,” he said. “He is doing well so far and we will continue to monitor him,” the team doctor added.

South Africa will play a Test match in the UAE after a gap of eight months in October. They will play two Test matches in UAE under their new coach Russell Domingo.
