Harbhajan Singh comes to the support of controversial movie 'Udta Punjab'

Harbhajan Singh believed that there was nothing wrong with the film

As the controversies surrounding the upcoming Bollywood movie ‘Udta Punjab’ continues to grow bigger with each day, Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed his support to the makers and claimed that the film only highlighted the realities in the state of Punjab.

The Jalandhar-born bowler took to Twitter and backed the intentions of the crime thriller to make Punjab a ‘drug-free state’. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the movie has an ensemble cast featuring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt. Interestingly, Punjabi singer turned actor Diljit Dosanjh is also essaying a key role in the film.

Since Udta Punjab deals with the sensitive issue of drug abuse, numerous celebrities have openly advocated for preventing its release. Nicknamed the ‘Turbanator, Harbhajan is one of the biggest sports personalities from Punjab to represent the country.

On his official Twitter account, the off-spinner wrote, “Nt a movie buff bt if #UdtaPunjab showing rightly whats happening in punjab what's wrong with it then ? We want our punjab drug free state.” (sic)

Reiterating the various positive features of his home state, Harbhajan affirmed, “#UdtaPunjab known for better things like love,peace,bhaichara,culture,respect,freedom fighters,spotsmans,music,I m a proud PUNJABI nd INDIAN.” (sic)

Imploring his fellow Punjabis to come out and support the movie, the 35-year old added, “Am a proud punjabi nd stand by all my punjabi brothers/sisters 4 #mymotherland Punjab nd humankind.not taking a stand 4 ny movie wht so ever.” (sic)

With only nine months from the local elections in Punjab, the movie is expected to kick up a political storm. Not keen to accept the 89 cuts enforced by the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC), there is a huge chance that Udta Punjab may not release as scheduled on June 17.
