Humour: Sachin Tendulkar's retirement offsets spike in TV sales
In an unexpected turn of events, online resale websites like OLX and Quickr reported a surge in the number of television sets put up for sale at their sites. This trend has been noticed for the last four days which coincidentally is also the number of days since Sachin Tendulkar announced his decision to retire after his 200th Test.
“It is due to the master blaster’s retirement decision”, said Sachin fan Darshan Bechde wiping a tear. He also added “I was one among those who wanted to switch off the TV each time God gets out but I haven’t been able to put it into action till date. I will not have any more of this dilemma of adoring God and simultaneously showing hatred for other players”.
With the number of television sets now available at throwaway prices on the net, television companies are gearing up to face this onslaught. Videocon which sponsors Mumbai Indians announced the launch of an innovative television that masks every MI player’s face with Sachin’s. Another television company launched a special edition in which all players’ names would read only Tendulkar. KKR refused the offer citing that they already had a Tendo in their ranks.
However the owners of OLX and Quickr are worried due to the number of outdated television models piling up for resale. They cited the instance of a 45-year old man putting up his Dyanora TV, bought in 1989, for sale. Another such case was that of one Ameer Rupaiyah putting up his BPL television, a brand he thought befitted his status in society, for sale.
In an related incident elsewhere, a TV channel has decided to show highlights of Sachin’s matches every morning from 6:00 to 6 :30 am. “That is usually the time when devotional programmes are telecast”, said a person who was simply called ‘Dev’.
