Ian Healy elevated to being Life Member of Queensland cricket
Ian Healy, for his exceptional career, was on Tuesday awarded Queensland Cricket’s highest honour of Life Membership at the 2014-15 Annual General Meeting. The boy from Biloela, joins his former teammates Allan Border, Stuart Law, Carl Rackemann.
His decorated career consists of 119 tests and he held the world record for the most test dismissals for a long time until Adam Gilchrist and March Boucher surpassed it. Already named in the Australian cricket team of the century, he was also inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2008.
Queensland Cricket Chairman Jim Holding congratulated Healy, 51, on achieving Life Membership.
“Ian is enjoying a very rare holiday overseas and so couldn’t be here tonight to accept in person, but I know he was very pleased to be honoured in this fashion. As well as his outstanding playing career, Ian has been very generous with his time and expertise whenever he has been asked, and more often than not, he will volunteer to help out wherever he can. He remains active with his club Norths and of course does very important work with the Bulls Masters, an organisation he helped to establish,” the Chairman said.
A passionate Queenslander, Healy regrets missing the state’s first shield win in 1995. The Queensland Bulls broke through 68 years of heartbreak and agony by lifting the maiden Sheffield Shield title in the season of 1994-95 in front of an adoring Gabba crowd.
Following Healy’s footsteps, his son Tom is the current Australian Under-19 wicket-keeper and niece Alyssa is the current wicket-keeper of the Ashes winning Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars.
