What's the story?

The International Cricket Council has announced that Manu Sawhney has been appointed as its new CEO. He will take over from the outgoing CEO David Richardson in July, after the Men's World Cup.

In case you didn't know...

In July last year, the ICC confirmed that Richardson would step down from his position as the Chief Executive, once his contract ends after the World Cup this year. Following a global search and appointment process led by ICC chairman Shashank Manohar and the nominations committee, Sawhney has been announced as Richardson's successor.

The heart of the matter

Sawhney is the former CEO of Singapore Sports Hub and also served as the Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports. Sawnhey was with the ESPN Star Sports for 17 years and was responsible for scaling the business and doubling annual revenues whilst delivering innovative content and digital growth strategy and building strong partnerships with stakeholders across 24 countries in Asia. He is also a non-executive director and member of the Audit Committee of Manchester United Ltd.

ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar expressed his happiness on Sawhney's appointment. He said that Sawnhey brings 22 years of outstanding commercial experience to the ICC and will lead the delivery of the new growth strategy of the game. He further added that Sawhney stood out amongst the other candidates produced by the search for the new CEO. The decision to appoint Manu Sawhney was a unanimous one and will serve the board fro July.

Sawhney said that it was a great privilege and responsibility to serve the global cricket community as the CEO of ICC. He thanked the ICC Board for the opportunity and said that he was looking forward to work with the members and the fellow directors.

What's next?

Sawhney will join the ICC in mid-February and will work alongside Richardson to ensure a smooth transition of leadership before assuming control in July.
