ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: Sri Lanka vs Scotland - Quick flicks of the match

Kumar Sangakkara’s run of good form continued against Scotland on Wednesday

Sangakkara’s 4th consecutive ODI ton

As predicted, Kumar Sangakkara went on to break new ground by scoring his fourth consecutive century in One-Day International (ODI) cricket. This was also Sangakkara’s 25th ODI century, leaving him only 3 short of matching Sanath Jayasuriya for the most number of ODI centuries by a Sri Lankan. The veteran left-hander now has also scored the most number of hundreds (4) in a single World Cup edition and has scored 5 centuries in the tournament overall, second only to Sachin Tendulkar (6).

Sangakkara’s review

Sri Lanka’s tryst with the Decision Review System (DRS) has largely been futile in this World Cup, but that wasn’t the case today as Sangakkara was clever enough to spot the slightest of edges from Michael Leask. Kulasekara bowled a bouncer that slid down the leg side to Leask, who attempted to hook it away. Sangakkara, however, detected a slight edge and opted for a review immediately.

The bowler didn’t look impressed, but Sangakkara was absolutely convinced. As the replays were being played on the big screen, Sanga was sheepishly smiling as there appeared to be no contact and it looked like they had wasted yet another review. But Snicko registered turbulence when the ball passed the bat, which was enough to convince the third umpire to overturn the decision.

Mathews’ 4 consecutive sixes

“Machan” is Sri Lankan equivalent of a friend, but Angelo Mathews showed no friendliness to Matt Machan as he deposited his low full tosses over cow corner for 4 consecutive sixes in the 44th over of the innings. However, Mathews died by the sword when he tried to repeat the same off the 6th ball of the over and was caught at mid-wicket.

Josh Davey becomes the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup

While Tim Southee, Mitchell Starc and Trent Boult are all wreaking havoc on batsmen, there is another bowler who has quietly gone about his work and is currently the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup.

It is none other than Josh Davey who has picked up 14 wickets in this World Cup, but he, unfortunately, won’t be able to add further to his tally as Scotland’s World Cup campaign has come to an end. He shouldn’t be too dejected, though, having finished his campaign with the wickets of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sangakkara & Mahela Jayawardene off consecutive deliveries vouching for his supreme bowling ability.

Mathews’ scores fastest fifty for Sri Lanka in World Cup history

Just 3 days after Dinesh Chandimal scored the fastest fifty for a Sri Lankan in World Cup history, Mathews broke that record by slamming a fifty off just 20 balls today. The whirlwind innings included 1 four and 6 sixes.
