ICC ODI Rankings: Rohit Sharma rises to career-high fifth spot, MS Dhoni slips out of top 10 after eight years
The latest ICC Player Rankings for ODIs, updated on January 24, has seen Rohit Sharma rise eight places to a career-high fifth spot on the batsmen's’ chart. Sharma had a stellar ODI series against Australia, scoring 441 runs in 5 matches – which included two centuries and a 99 made in a winning cause.
Rohit is now the second placed Indian batsmen in the list, behind second-placed Virat Kohli. On the other hand, MS Dhoni has slipped out of the top 10 batsmen’s list, and finds himself at 13th spot. The last time he had been out of the top 10 list was in February 2008.
The three Indian batsmen in the top 10 now are Virat Kohli (2nd), Rohit Sharma (5th) and Shikhar Dhawan (7th). Ajinkya Rahane has moved up three places to 25th.
Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith and David Warner have also surged in the rankings as a result of their series win over India. Maxwell’s 169 runs in the series push him to spots up to eighth place, while Steve Smith rises five places to 15th. Warner rises to a career-high 18th spot. Young Mitchell Marsh moved by a huge leap to 43rd place, jumping 21 places.
Rohit Sharma pushes Tillakaratne Dilshan out of the top 5, and there is no change above that. Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor shift down one spot to accommodate Maxwell’s rise.
Meanwhile, India managed to hold onto their second spot in the team rankings after winning the 5th ODI. They trail Australia by 15 points and are just one point ahead of South Africa, which will play five ODIs against sixth-ranked England from 3-14 February.
