ICC T20 World Cup 2016: Youth dies in hospital without treatment as doctors watch India vs West Indies
A critically injured youth died in hospital in the absence of doctors, who were too busy watching the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final match between India and West Indies. The doctors failed to attend the patient, who later expired without treatment at a hospital in Mathura according to police on 2 April.
The disheartening incident was followed by an ugly protest when the patient’s family members and neighbors refused to hand over the body to police for post-mortem.
An FIR was registered on a complaint by the youth’s father said, "Sonu and Monu, residents of Mant Mula area, were attacked by Raees and his four accomplices near Ravi hospital on Thursday. While Monu managed to flee, Sonu received serious injuries. He was then rushed to the district hospital by passersby."
After administering first aid, doctors and para-medical staff at the hospital did not attend to Sonu properly. They were busy watching the T20 cricket match between India and West Indies. The paramedics gave him some pain killers when the match was over. Sonu breathed his last on Friday morning,"
The protesting family members finally relented after Chief Medical Officer , Mathura, K P Garg assured them that they will take actions against the responsible staff.
Garg said, "Action against Dr. Dharmveer, Dr. Sushil and Nurse Poonam Sharma has been recommended to Principal Secretary Health."
India lost the match by seven wickets and two balls to spare and knocked out of the tournament. Batting first India posted a competitive total of 192 mainly due to Virat Kohli’s heroics but couldn’t defend it despite picking up key early wickets.
The defeat was fairly unexpected from the perspective of the Indian fans as the team was touted as title favorites. In the last match, they defeated Australia in a virtual quarter final match where they chased down 161 in style.
Indian vice-captain Virat Kohli was in magical form throughout the tournament as he scored 273 runs in 5 matches at an average of 136 and with a strike rate of 146.77. The whole country was glued to the television watching team India take on the Caribbeans.
Such is the passion and love for the sports in India that an innocent youth lost his life without treatment while his whole nation was battling out for cricketing supremacy against eleven West Indians.
