ICC World Cup 2015: New Zealand vs England - Stats of the day

English batsmen found Tim Southee unplayable

In a superb display of fast bowling, New Zeland speedster Tim Southee ripped the heart out of England’s batting line-up by picking up figures of 7 for 33 in 9 overs, to bowl out the Eoin Morgan-led side for a paltry total of 123 in 33.2 overs.

The 26-year-old started the carnage by picking up the opening pair of Ian Bell and Moeen Ali and then sliced through the middle and lower order, dismissing James Taylor, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Steven Finn to become the first Black Caps bowler ever to take 7 wickets in an ODI match.

If England thought that they could make the game a little interesting by making early inroads into the New Zealand top-order, they were proven completely wrong as Kiwis’ skipper Brendon McCullum tore into the English bowling attack in an exhilarating display that totally knocked the opposition out.

He was eventually out for a 25-ball 77, with the knock containing 8 fours and 7 sixes. That innings meant that the Kiwis knocked off the runs in a mere 12.2 overs and cantered home with 8 wickets in hand.

Here are the stats of the day from the game:

7/33 - Southee’s figures against England today, are the best ever by a New Zealand bowler in an ODI.

- Southee became the third New Zealand bowler after Sir Richard Hadlee and Shane Bond to take a five-wicket haul in a World Cup game.

- Southee became the fourth bowler to take 7 wickets in a World Cup game. Winston Davis was the first to achieve the feat in the 1983 World Cup, when he took 7 for 51 versus Australia at Leeds. Glenn McGrath was the second, taking 7 for 15 against Namibia in the 2003 edition at Potchefstroom and Andy Bichel took figures of 7 for 20 against England in the same tournament.

- Southee also became the first New Zealand bowler to pick up 7 wickets in an ODI.

- England’s total of 123 all out was their third lowest in World Cup history.

32 - Number of years since England have won a World Cup game against the Black Caps. The two teams have met on four occasions at the mega event since then and New Zealand have won each time.

18 - Number of balls taken by Brendon McCullum to reach his fifty on Friday. This is now a new record in World Cup cricket for the fastest fifty scored by a batsman. The 33-year-old beat his own record of 20 deliveries, that he achieved in the 2007 edition of the tournament against Canada. He is also now joint third with Simon O’Donnell, Glenn Maxwell and Shahid Afridi for the fastest half-century scored in an ODI.

- Number of sixes hit by McCullum during his sensational innings of 77 off 25 balls. This is now a World Cup record for the most sixes hit by anyone while chasing a target.

308 - McCullum’s strike-rate of 308 is the second best in an ODI innings where the batsman has scored 50 or more runs. The record is held by AB de Villiers, who scored at a strike-rate of 338.63 during his destructive innings of 149 off 44 balls against the West Indies at Johannesburg earlier this year.

- New Zealand chased down England’s target of 124 with 226 balls to spare. This is now their third biggest win, in terms of balls remaining in ODIs. It is also England’s joint heaviest loss in terms of deliveries remaining in ODIs.
