ICC World Cup 2019: Ricky Ponting picks his favorites for the title
What's the story?
Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting believes that England will be heading into the competition as favorites because of their recent form and home advantage. The hosts will be challenged primarily by India and Australia.
In case you didn't know...
With the ICC World Cup 2019 less than two weeks away, many experts and fans are assessing every team's strengths, weaknesses and chances. England have been labelled as the favorites by several former greats owing to their stupendous form in recent times and the balance of their side. However, some of them have also picked India and Australia
The pitches in England and Wales, where the World Cup is going to be held, are expected to be flat and batting-friendly. These conditions are bound to favor England, who have several big hitters in the lineup who are all capable of winning matches single-handedly.
The heart of the matter
In an interview with Times of India, the World Cup winning captain was asked whether he thought any team was a clear favorite. He replied by saying England will start as favorites as they have started playing well in limited overs and the tournament will be played on home turf. He went on to add that that they will be challenged by India and Australia.
He did make a special mention about David Warner and Steve Smith though:
"The inclusion of these two cricketers would definitely enhance Australia's performance in the World Cup. Australia did not do well while they were away from the team. I'm sure not only me, but the entire team is excited to have them back," Ponting said.
The former Australian skipper also reckons that this will be a very open World Cup and teams like West Indies, South Africa, and Pakistan will also be contenders to win the title.
What's next?
England will begin their World Cup campaign on 30th May against South Africa. Australia, the most successful team in the history of the World Cup will play their first match on 1st June against Afghanistan. Meanwhile, India will kick-start their World Cup on 5th June against South Africa.
