India A vs England 2017, First warm-up match: Live score updates and commentary
We have seen MS Dhoni captaining a side in Indian colours for the final time. It would have been great if Captain Cool had signed off with a win. Indians have themselves to blame as the fielders have put down few chances that proved to be costly.
For a warm-up tie, this match had everything- runs, wickets, drama and more importantly a blitz from the bat of India’s World Cup-winning captain, Dhoni. Sam Billings was brilliant and has made a case for himself to get a place in the England XI with a gritty 93 that saw his team home. Kuldeep Yadav must be gutted as his heroics can't take his team home. India can take a lot of positives from this match as the likes of Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan looked in good touch ahead of the England ODIs.
There is one more warm-up game at the same venue before the ODIs on 12th January and India A will field a completely different squad led by Ajinkya Rahane which includes the likes of Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar etc.
Do follow us for the live updates from the second warm-up game between India A and England at the CCI. Till then, this is Vignesh Ananthasubramanian signing off.
End of the match: England 307-7 (Woakes 11*, Rashid 6*)
That’s it. England beat India by 3 wickets. Chris Woakes scored two fours off two balls and took his team home in the penultimate over.
End of over no. 48: England 298-7 (Woakes 3*, Rashid 5*)
It has started to drizzle at the CCI as England bring the equation down to 7 runs needed from 12 balls. A good over from Mohit Sharma that had only 4 runs scored off it.
End of over no. 47: England 294-7 (Woakes 0*, Rashid 4*)
An eventful over from Hardik Pandya. He castled Billings off the very first ball and was right on target in his next five deliveries but somehow Rashid managed to score a boundary to get the equation down to 11 needed from 18 balls.
End of over no. 46: England 290-6 (Woakes 0*, Billings 93*)
Kuldeep strikes. Wicket maiden for the chinaman. Brilliant over from Kuldeep under pressure. He tossed the ball up to Dawson who offered a simple return catch to the bowler. Chris Woakes was clueless against Kuldeep in the next five balls as he hardly got his bat to the ball. Kuldeep finishes his spell with figures of 5-60.
End of over no. 45: England 290-5 (Dawson 41*, Billings 93*)
For a change, Dawson takes charge as he came down the track and smashed Chahal over the mid-wicket ropes. Indians have bowled yet another over in which 10 runs were conceded. India need a miracle now.
End of over no. 44: England 280-5 (Dawson 33*, Billings 90*)
There was no luck for Kuldeep as Yuvraj dropped a sitter from the bat of Billings at backward point and the ball ran away to the boundary. England inch closer to a win as they require just 35 runs to win with both these batsmen look set to do the job for their team.
End of over no. 43: England 270-5 (Dawson 32*, Billings 82*)
A tight over Chahal in which only 6 runs were conceded. India need a wicket to put breaks on the scoring rate.
Yuzi Chahal comes back to bowl. India desperately need a wicket now.
End of over no. 42: England 264-5 (Dawson 31*, Billings 77*)
Yet again Billings called the shots as he took Kuldeep to the cleaners taking 12 runs off his over.
Important phase in the game as Kuldeep Yadav comes on to bowl.
End of over no. 41: England 252-5 (Dawson 29*, Billings 67*)
Billings is on a roll as he pulled Hardik Pandya to the square-leg fence and scored two more runs in the over to make it 8 from the 41st over bowled by Pandya.
End of over no. 40: England 246-5 (Dawson 28*, Billings 63*)
Sam Billings took the attack to the bowler, Ashish Nehra as he smashed him for two boundaries off two consecutive balls. First one was a paddle scoop to the fine-leg boundary and off the next ball, Billings pulled one to the square-leg fence. In total, 12 runs were scored in that over.
England need 71 runs to win from 65 balls.
End of over no. 39: England 234-5 (Dawson 26*, Billings 53*)
Billings reached his fifty when the ball took the inside edge and ran to the fine-leg boundary. Pandya came back well as he tested Dawson with a couple of brilliant deliveries.
End of over no. 38: England 228-5 (Dawson 25*, Billings 48*)
A great comeback over from the veteran as he almost struck off the last ball when the ball took the leading edge of Sam Billings' bat and flew to the left of Shikhar Dhawan, who dived full stretch but couldn’t get his hands on the ball.
England need 82 runs to win from 78 balls. Ahish Nehra into the attack replacing Yuvraj.
End of over no. 37: England 223-5 (Dawson 22*, Billings 46*)
Hardik almost provided the breakthrough as he had Billings caught by Sanju Samson, who dived to his left at backward point, but failed to grab the ball with his hands. Later in the over, Hardik's delivery struck Billings on his helmet and the batsman was checked by the England physio and had a replacement helmet coming in. In total, 7 runs were conceded in the over. India need a wicket to get things under control.
Hardik Pandya, who bowled with the new ball, comes back into the attack.
End of over no. 36: England 216-5 (Dawson 18*, Billings 44*)
A brilliant comeback over from Yuvraj as he kept things tight and conceded just 4 runs in it. India need a wicket now as these two are threatening to take the game away from India.
Yuvraj Singh comes back into the attack.
End of over no. 35: England 212-5 (Dawson 15*, Billings 43*)
A partnership is quietly building between these two as 8 runs were taken from the 35th over bowled by Kuldeep. Dawson yet again puts away the bad delivery to the boundary.
England need 101 runs in 16 overs to win. Billings and Kuldeep hold the key for both the teams.
End of over no. 34: England 204-5 (Dawson 9*, Billings 41*)
A good passage of play for the Indians as the England batsmen are struggling to counter the spinners. As we speak, Chahal continues to bowl. Yet another good over ruined by a loose delivery that was put away to the boundary by Dawson.
End of over no. 33: England 199-5 (Dawson 5*, Billings 40*)
Kuldeep keeps testing the visitors with his variations, but against the run of play, he gave a loose delivery to Dawson, who smashed it to the boundary.
End of over no. 32: England 194-5 (Dawson 1*, Billings 39*)
Brilliant over from Chahal as just three runs were conceded by the leggie. Match over for England? Can Dawson and Billings take them home? Remember that England bat till number 11.
Much needed over for India as Kuldeep looks threatening. It is sad that he has not been picked for the Indian ODI and T20I side. Yuzi Chahal into the attack.
End of over no. 31: England 191-5 (Dawson 0*, Billings 37*)
There you go. Kuldeep strikes twice in the over. First, it was the big wicket of Buttler when the wicketkeeper-batsman tried to hit the chinaman out of the ground but ended up getting caught by Mohit Sharma at long-off. Two balls later, he trapped Moeen Ali plumb in front of the stumps. Liam Dawson joins Sam Billings at the crease.
End of over no. 30: England 189-3 (Buttler 44, Billings 37)
MS Dhoni will look for a wicket in the next few overs as Mohit's over conceded 11 runs making it 39 runs in the last 18 balls. Buttler once again took charge and drove Mohit straight down the ground for a boundary. India need a wicket as soon as possible.
Yuvraj Singh taken out of the attack. Mohit comes back into the attack
End of over no. 29: England 178-3 (Buttler 36, Billings 34)
The runs continue to flow for England as 12 runs taken from Kuldeep Yadav’s fourth over. Sam Billings was severe on the chinaman as he reverse swept him for two boundaries in two consecutive balls. India will need a breakthrough here.
Kuldeep Yadav back into the attack replacing Mohit Sharma.
End of over no. 28: England 166-3 (Buttler 33, Billings 26)
End of over no. 27: England 150-3 (Buttler 18, Billings 25)
Mohit continues to impress with the ball as he kept things tight from his end as he conceded just 4 runs. 150 up for England in the 27th over.
End of over no. 26: England 146-3 (Buttler 17, Billings 22)
A much-needed over for the Poms as 8 runs were taken from it including a boundary over the covers from the bat of Jos Buttler. Seems like Buttler has decided to go after Yuvraj.
End of over no. 25: England 138-3 (Buttler 11, Billings 20)
Almost a fourth wicket. The pressure created by the bowlers paid off as Jos Buttler hit the ball in the air and it went to Mandeep Singh at backward point where put down an easy chance. England batsmen were struggling to keep the scorecard ticking as they scored just 3 off the over.
End of over no. 24: England 135-3 (Buttler 9, Billings 19)
Yuvraj Singh is off to a decent start with the ball in his hands as he backed the good work done by Mohit and Chahal. He didn’t give any loose deliveries and maintained the pressure created by his predecessors.
Yuvraj Singh has the ball in his hands and the crowd goes crazy
End of over no. 23: England 131-3 (Buttler 8, Billings 16)
Yet again, Mohit Sharma bowls a brilliant over in which only 2 runs were conceded. The Indians have bounced back well after the English openers took them to the cleaners.
End of over no. 22: England 129-3 (Buttler 7, Billings 15)
Chahal complements Sharma well by holding the other end by bowling another tight over. He gives away just four runs, to keep the two batsmen tied up in the middle.
End of over no. 21: England 125-3 (Billings 13, Buttler 5)
End of over no. 20: England 122-3 (Billings 11, Buttler 4)
End of over no. 19: England 121-3 (Billings 10, Buttler 4)
Yadav gives away nine runs in his third over – Billings picks up a boundary off the last ball by a drilling a ball to extra cover. The duo can run well between the wickets, so the run rate won’t be much of an issue.
End of over no. 18: England 112-3 (Billings 5, Buttler 3)
Chahal finally grabs a wicket, snaring captain Eoin Morgan – Shikhar Dhawan grabs a stunning catch at first slip. Morgan tries to reverse sweep the delivery, but can’t get past Dhawan’s fine reflexes.
End of over no. 17: England 109-2 (Morgan 2 Billings 3)
Yadav returns to take one more wicket, this time picking up the dangerous Roy, sending him packing with a loopy delivery which is caught well by Mohit Sharma in the deep. The slog sweep stays in the air for an eternity, before it is snapped up by the fast bowler.
End of over no. 16: England 106-1 (Billings 2, Roy 62)
Roy continues to milk the Indian bowlers. He sits down on one knee and smacks the leggie to the square leg fence, but Chahal keeps the rest of the over tight by giving away only three more.
End of over no. 15: England 97-1 (Billings 1, Roy 54)
It takes a chinaman to finally break the partnership. Kuldeep Yadav enters and snares Alex Hales straight away. Short ball, Hales has a go at it but can’t go past Sanju Samson at short cover. He picked up the googly well, but failed to put it away.
End of over no. 14: England 95-0 (Hales 40, Roy 53)
Chahal comes back for another over, and manages to stop the damage for the time being, giving away only seven runs. In the meantime, Roy reverse-sweeps a delivery to point to reach his half century.
End of over no. 13: England 88-0 (Hales 38, Roy 48)
Sharma’s first delivery hurtles down the leg side, and Hales helps it to the deep midwicket fence. He caresses the next ball to the midwicket boundary. A full delivery is smacked right over the bowler’s head and right into the sightscreen. Sharma’s horror over doesn’t end, as the last ball of the over ends up next to midwicket. 19 runs off that over, and Sharma already looks a tired man.
End of over no. 12: England 69-0 (Hales 23, Roy 44)
Roy welcomes Chahal with a couple of boundaries – one to long leg and the other over point. The rest of the four deliveries are dot balls.
And spin does makes an entry: Yuzvendra Chahal, the wiry leg spinner, enters the scene.
End of over no. 11: England 61-0 (Hales 23, Roy 36)
Sharma returns with a tight over, giving away only three runs. The English opening pair looks rock solid in the middle. Spin in the offing already?
End of over no. 10: England 58-0 (Hales 22, Roy 34)
Dhawan spills down a chance at slip, dropping Jason Roy off the bowling of Hardik Pandya. Hales picks up another boundary, this time off Pandya, pulling a short delivery to the square leg fence.
End of over no. 9: England 51-0 (Hales 17, Roy 32)
Sharma sends down an expensive first over, giving away nine runs by conceding two boundaries to Alex Hales, one to midwicket and the next to the covers. The fifty is up for the tourists.
Right-arm medium pacer Mohit Sharma into the attack.
End of over no. 8: England 42/0 (Jason Roy 31*, Alex Hales 9*)
Hardik Pandya bowls a tight over again as he conceded just 3 runs in it. He badly needs someone from the other end to back his good work. Will it be the new bowler, Mohit Sharma?
End of over no. 7: England 39/0 (Jason Roy 30*, Alex Hales 8*)
Same old story as Nehra releases the pressure mounted on the English batsmen by Hardik. 15 runs were conceded in the over that had a six over square-leg and two fours, one through the covers and one to the fine-leg region in it.
End of over no. 6: England 24/0 (Jason Roy 16*, Alex Hales 8*)
Yet again, Hardik Pandya kept things under control as he conceded just 4 runs in his third over. He badly needs support from Nehra, who is bowling from the other end.
End of over no. 5: England 20/0 (Jason Roy 13*, Alex Hales 7*)
Ashish Nehra conceded yet another boundary and released the pressure created by Pandya from the other end. After conceding just 1 run in the first five balls, the final delivery of Nehra’s over kissed the inside edge of Jason Roy’s bat and ran away to the fine-leg fence.
End of over no. 4: England 15/0 (Jason Roy 9*, Alex Hales 6*)
Maiden over from Hardik Pandya. Jason Roy survived a scare when there was a huge LBW appeal from the bowler and the close-in fielders, but the umpire refused to raise his finger. The replays suggested that the ball might go on to hit the top of leg-stump.
End of over no. 3: England 15/0 (Jason Roy 9*, Alex Hales 6*)
Ashish Nehra was found off target yet again as Alex Hales dispatched him to the square-leg fence in his second over that conceded 5 runs. This is the first 50-over match Nehra is playing since the 2014-15 Vijay Hazare trophy.
End of over no. 2: England 10/0 (Jason Roy 8*, Alex Hales 2*)
Hardik Pandya got off to a great start with the ball in his hand as he conceded just 2 runs in his first over.
End of over no. 1: England 8/0 (Jason Roy 8*, Alex Hales 0*)
Unlike the Indian batsmen, the England openers were on target right from the word go as Jason Roy drove Nehra for a boundary down the ground off the very first ball and followed it up with a four to the cover fence off the last ball of the over.
We are back. Jason Roy and Alex Hales will open the batting for England while veteran Ashish Nehra will bowl the first over for India A. England need 305 runs to win.
After put into bat, India A managed to score 304 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 50 overs. Ambati Rayudu top-scored with 100 before retiring out while MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan notched up their half-centuries. With the kind of batting line-up England has, they are the favourites to come out victorious. Can the bowlers give MS Dhoni’s captaincy a winning farewell? We will find it out in about 30 minutes’ time.
Can the bowlers give MS Dhoni’s captaincy a winning farewell? We will find it out in about 30 minutes’ time.
End of the innings: India A 304/5 (MS Dhoni 68*, Hardik Pandya 4)
Dhoni finally unleashes the pyrotechnics, saving the best for the last. Chris Woakes is at the receiving end of the pasting, as the final over yields 23 runs. He picks up the length and deposits it to the square leg fence, before picking up two boundaries behind the keeper. A miscued pull shot flew into no-man’s land, while a back of the hand slower ball was met with a wild swoosh of the bat and ended up deep inside the midwicket stands. Woakes makes a good comeback, slipping in a yorker to negate Dhoni’s hammer-like blade, keeping him to a single, but not before the India A captain took his side past 300.
End of over no. 49: India A 281/5 (Hardik Pandya 4, MS Dhoni 45)
Hardik Pandya is still unable to sweetly time the ball, seeming rusty from the rehabilitation that followed his shoulder injury last year. Dhoni, however, picks up another boundary, smashing the short ball to the mid-off boundary to bring the team closer to 300.
End of over no. 48: India A 273/5 (Hardik Pandya 3, MS Dhoni 38)
Both Pandya and Dhoni are still not able to find the boundaries as frequently as they would have wanted to. Dhoni picks up a boundary in the final delivery of the 48th over, drilling a fullish delivery to the long off boundary.
End of over no. 47: India A 265/5 (Hardik Pandya, MS Dhoni 32*)
With three overs to go, Dhoni will look to free his arms and take the team as close to 300 as possible. He picked up a boundary on the fourth ball off Jake Ball’s ninth over, squeezing out a wide delivery to the third man fence.
End of over no. 46: India A 258/5 (Hardik Pandya, MS Dhoni 26*)

Vintage Yuvraj Singh! The southpaw smashed two sixes in the over bowled by Adil Rashid and those hits reminded the fans about the old Yuvraj who is known to smack the ball out of the park. Both the sixes were hit over the bowler's head and Yuvraj looked comfortable in his stay at the crease.
End of over no. 33: India A 157/2 (Ambati Rayudu 72*, Yuvraj Singh 11*)
Yuvraj Singh’s struggle against the rising deliveries continued as Ball almost had him twice in the over. This is the third consecutive over in which just 1 run was scored. This over also had the visitors appealing unsuccessfully for a leg before decision against Dhawan as the ball was going down the leg side.
End of over no. 14: India A 44/1 (Ambati Rayudu 9*, Shikhar Dhawan 26*)
Yet another good over for England as just one run was scored off it. The Indian batsmen have to step on the accelerator and look to put on a huge total on the board.
End of over no. 13: India A 43/1 (Ambati Rayudu 9*, Shikhar Dhawan 25*)
Yet again, an Indian batsman survived a close call. This time, it was Ambati Rayudu, who was running for a non-existent single and was saved by the fielder, whose throw was miles away from the stumps at the non-striker's end. Just 1 run was scored in Ali's second over.
End of over no. 12: India A 42/1 (Ambati Rayudu 9*, Shikhar Dhawan 24*)
Jake Ball’s first over hardly troubled Ambati Rayudu as the right-hander smashed the ball through the point region for a boundary and in total, 6 runs were scored in the 12th over.
Jake Ball replaces David Willey and will bowl from the far end.
End of over no. 11: India A 36/1 (Ambati Rayudu 3*, Shikhar Dhawan 24*)
Only three runs were scored in Moeen Ali’s first over and the off-spinner almost had Dhawan when the left-hander was beaten for flight and chipped the ball in the air. Fortunately for Dhawan, the ball was just away from the fielder at covers.
First bowling change for England as Moeen Ali replaces Chris Woakes.
End of over no. 10: India A 33/1 (Ambati Rayudu 2*, Shikhar Dhawan 22*)
When the pressure was building on the Indian batsmen, Dhawan stood up and drove Willey through the covers for a boundary. A mix-up between Dhawan and Rayudu could have had Dhawan walking back to the pavilion but a poor throw from the fielder at covers saved the left-hander from blushes. India are off to a steady start after 10 overs in which they scored 33 runs for the loss of 1 wicket.
End of over no. 9: India A 28/1 (Ambati Rayudu 1*, Shikhar Dhawan 18*)
Once again, Woakes bowled a brilliant over which saw just 3 runs off it. He made sure that the pressure created by Willey was maintained from the other end.
End of over no. 8: India A 25/1 (Ambati Rayudu 0*, Shikhar Dhawan 17*)
Wicket: Mandeep Singh bowled David Willey 8 (24)
Mandeep Singh's struggle at the crease came to an end when an inswinger from David Willey disturbed the stumps. Ambati Rayudu walked out to replace Mandeep and managed to see through the remaining three balls of the over and gave Willey a wicket maiden.
End of over no. 7: India A 25/0 (Mandeep Singh 8*, Shikhar Dhawan 17*)
After conceding a six in his previous over, Woakes bounced back and kept the batsmen at bay as he conceded just 1 run in his fourth over. Mandeep, who is struggling to middle the ball, is taking his time to get going as he has scored just 8 off 21 balls.
End of over no. 6: India A 24/0 (Mandeep Singh 7*, Shikhar Dhawan 17*)
Dhawan continued his good form as he smashed Willey for a boundary through the off-side. But, Willey made a good comeback when he tested Dhawan with a delivery that pitched on off-stump and just moved away from his bat. The battle between Dhawan and Willey is evenly poised as both the men are trying to stamp the authority on the other.
End of over no. 5: India A 19/0 (Mandeep Singh 6*, Shikhar Dhawan 13*)
After scoring a boundary in Woakes’ previous over, Dhawan backed it up with a six over the fine-leg boundary off the second ball of the fifth over. The fielder at fine-leg, Adil Rashid had a chance but he was well inside the ropes and that made things tougher for him. India are off to a cautious start as MS Dhoni’s men have 19 runs on the board without the loss of a wicket after the first five wickets.
End of over no. 4: India A 13/0 (Mandeep Singh 6*, Shikhar Dhawan 7*)
Mandeep looked tentative and struggled to get going as Willey almost had him when the fourth ball of the over missed the top of off-stump by a whisker before the last ball of the over was dispatched to the boundary by Mandeep. It was a cracking cover drive that bisected the fielders at mid-off and covers and raced to the boundary. This should give a struggling Mandeep a lot of confidence to score big in the match.
End of over no. 3: India A 9/0 (Mandeep Singh 2*, Shikhar Dhawan 7*)
Dhawan survived a scare when the bowler, Chris Woakes failed to hit the stumps at the striker's end as Dhawan was well out of his crease trying to take a quick single. Dhawan made him pay later in the over when he drove Woakes through the covers for a boundary.
End of over no. 2: India A 3/0 (Mandeep Singh 1*, Shikhar Dhawan 2*)
David Willey, who has the knack of moving the new ball both the ways, opened the bowling for England from the other end and kept troubling Mandeep Singh with his movement. Mandeep somehow managed to open his account with a single to the square-leg fielder while Dhawan looked comfortable in the four balls he faced in this over and scored two runs.
End of over no. 1: India A 0/0 (Mandeep Singh 0*, Shikhar Dhawan 0*)
Chris Woakes was bang on target right from the word go as he swung the ball and troubled Mandeep Singh, who looked shaky throughout the over. A maiden over to start the match and this is exactly what England would have wanted.
Here we go. Shikhar Dhawan and Mandeep Singh walk out to bat. Chris Woakes will start the proceedings for England.

Rayudu reached his fifty by coming down the track and lofting the ball over the covers fielder for a boundary and followed it up with a sweep shot to the square-leg boundary.
End of over no. 39: England 234-5 (Dawson 26*, Billings 53*)
Billings reached his fifty when the ball took the inside edge and ran to the fine-leg boundary. Pandya came back well as he tested Dawson with a couple of brilliant deliveries.
