India vs England 2016: Mohammed Shami sustains hamstring injury during Day One of the Rajkot Test
Indian speedster Mohammed Shami was forced to withdraw from bowling during the first post-lunch session on Day One of the first India-England Test in Rajkot on Wednesday.
The 25-ywar-old speedster ran in to bowl his 10th over of the innings and after delivering the first ball, held the back of his thigh to indicate that he had sustained an injury to that part of his body.
Once he went up to the bowling mark, he seemed in further pain and Virat Kohli, who was around him with Gautam Gambhir, called out the physio Patrick Farhart to have a look at Shami’s condition on the field.
Eventually, it was found that the injury was too much for him to carry on and Umesh Yadav was called in to complete the remaining five deliveries.
Shami has perhaps been the most injury-prone Indian bowler in the last 2 years. Following the 2015 World Cup in Australia, where he took 17 wickets in 7 matches, he didn’t feature for India for close to a year before making a comeback for the tour to Australia in early 2016.
However, before even bowling a single ball, he sustained a leg injury and was ruled out of the tour.He went back and worked on his recovery once again and made the cut into India’s World T20 campaign, where he played only in the warm-up matches.
He played his first full match for India during the tour of West Indies and the also played the three-match Test series against New Zealand.
In 19 Tests so far, Shami has picked up 66 wickets at at average of 33.72 and in 47 ODIs, he has taken 87 wickets at an average of 24.89.
