India in contention for 2nd spot in ICC Test rankings
The battle for second place in the ICC Test rankings is becoming closer, as India, along with Australia and England, are in contention for the coveted spot. The chase for the spot has become more evident after 4th ranked India’s series victory over the 3rd ranked Australian team in the four-match Border-Gavaskar trophy, which India lead by a 3-0 margin. Currently, England are placed 2nd on the rankings, but following their failure to win a single Test in the ongoing New Zealand series, which is still locked at 0-0, their spot is in danger.
All three teams still have an opportunity to finish behind the top-ranked South Africans on the Test table at the April 1 cut-off date, and pocket a significant USD 350,000.
The Test Championship table will be updated only after March 26, when the final Tests of the India-Australia series, as well as the New Zealand-England series, are scheduled to conclude. The ICC has already confirmed that India will finish on top of the ODI rankings table, and are believed to take away an amount of USD 175,000 as prize money, along with the shield.
