India playing 11 from Barinder Sran's ODI debut in 2016 - where are they now?
Barinder Sran has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket. The left-arm fast bowler represented India in six ODI matches and two T20Is. Notably, all of his international appearances came in 2016.
Talking about Barinder Sran's career, he played his first ODI match for India against Australia at the WACA Ground on January 12, 2016. He was the pick of the bowlers for India on his ODI debut, where he returned with figures of 3/56 in 9.2 overs, dismissing Aaron Finch, David Warner, and Steven Smith.
Despite a fantastic performance on ODI debut, Barinder Sran could not have a long international career. Fans still remember his spell in Perth on debut, and here's a look India's playing XI from that fixture against Australia.
Openers - Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan
The iconic pair of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan opened the batting for India in that bilateral ODI match against Australia. Rohit played one of the best knocks of his career, aggregating 171 runs off 163 balls. He remained in the middle for the entire 50 overs and hit 13 fours and seven sixes. Meanwhile, Dhawan managed only nine runs off 22 balls.
Sharma is the captain of India in ODIs and Tests right now. He won the 2024 T20 World Cup as Indian skipper and announced his retirement from T20Is in June. Speaking of Dhawan's wherabouts, the left-handed batter retired from international matches earlier this month and has signed with the Gujarat team in Legends League Cricket 2024.
Middle Order - Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni (c and wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, and Manish Pandey
India played with three specialist batters, a wicketkeeper and an all-rounder in the middle-order for that ODI game. However, Rohit Sharma's 171 and Virat Kohli's 91 compelled MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to come before specialist batters Ajinkya Rahane and Manish Pandey in the batting order.
Kohli took 97 balls for his 91, smashing nine fours and a six. Dhoni was dismissed was a 13-ball 18, whereas Jadeja remained not out on 10 from five balls. Rahane and Pandey did not get a chance to bat.
Dhoni retired from all formats of international cricket in 2020. The Chennai Super Kings star has kept everyone guessing about his IPL future. Kohli and Jadeja retired from T20Is earlier this year but are integral parts of the Indian team in ODIs and Tests. Rahane and Pandey are active in all formats, but they have not been selected in the Indian squad for a long time now.
Bowlers - Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Barinder Sran
India played with three specialist fast bowlers and a spinner in that ODI at the WACA Ground. Barinder Sran shared the new ball with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Except Sran, none of the Indian pacers could open their accounts with the ball. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell but conceded 68 runs in nine overs.
Barinder Sran is the first bowler from this lot to retire. Ravichandran Ashwin is a regular part of India's Test team, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav have been dropped but they have not given up yet. Ashwin, Kumar, and Yadav are also active in the IPL.
