India playing 11 from Sachin Tendulkar's first Test hundred in 1990 - where are they now?
On August 14, 1990, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar notched up his first international hundred. He scored an unbeaten 119 off 189 balls as India finished on 343-6 in a chase of 408 at Old Trafford in Manchester in the second Test of the three-match series against England.
Set an improbable target to win the contest, India were in trouble at 183-6. Openers Ravi Shastri and Navjot Sidhu were dismissed for 12 and 0 respectively. Sanjay Manjrekar scored a defiant half-century but fell for 50 off 77 balls. Dilip Vengsarkar was out for 32, skipper Mohammad Azharuddin for 19, and all-rounder Kapil Dev for 26.
Tendulkar, who had contributed a defiant 68 in the first innings, then joined forces with Manoj Prabhakar (67* off 128). The duo added an unbroken 160 for the seventh wicket as the Test ended in a draw. Tendulkar hit 17 fours in his 225-minute stay at the crease, notching up the first of his 100 international tons.
On that note, let's take a look at where Tendulkar's teammates from the historic 1990 Test in Manchester are now.
Openers: Ravi Shastri & Navjot Sidhu
Shastri and Sidhu opened the innings in the Test in which Tendulkar scored his first international ton. The duo fell cheaply in both innings. Post-retirement, Shastri took to commentary and created a fan base with his inimitable style. He is also an ex-coach of the Indian team and formed a great alliance with Virat Kohli.
Sidhu also took up commentary after retiring from the game. He courted controversy for his over-the-top style and disappeared from the commentary for a few years. He recently returned with the mic in hand during IPL 2024. The 60-year-old is also a politician, representing the Indian National Congress (INC).
Middle order: Sanjay Manjrekar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin
Manjrekar starred with 93 & 50 in the Test against England that saw Tendulkar scoring his first international hundred. After a stop-start career that saw him play 37 Tests and 74 ODIs, he also took up commentary. While he is known for his frank views, the former batter has also been at the center of controversy for some bizarre comments. He once referred to Ravindra Jadeja as a 'bits and pieces player'.
Vengsarkar scored 6 & 32 in the 1990 Manchester Test. He played his last game for India in February 1992. After retirement, Vengsarkar started the Elf-Vengsarkar Academy in 1995. A former vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, Vengsarkar also served as the chairman of the national selection committee between 2006 and 2008.
Former captain Azharuddin was banned for his alleged role in match-fixing in 2000. However, he contested the ban in court and got it overturned. Azhar, however, ended his career with 99 Test matches. He had a controversial tenure as president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). Like Sidhu, he represents the Indian National Congress in politics.
All-rounders, wicketkeeper & bowlers: Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar, Kiran More, Anil Kumble, Narendra Hirwani
Legendary all-rounder Kapil claimed three wickets and scored 26 runs in the Test in which Tendulkar notched up his maiden international hundred. Kapil retired in 1994 with a then-world record of 434 Test scalps. He briefly coached the Indian team between 1999 and 2000. Post-retirement, he took up golf and was named President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) in June 2024.
Prabhakar, who was at the other end when Tendulkar reached his maiden international hundred, was banned for his alleged role in match-fixing. Post-retirement, he has taken up coaching. He has served as the coach of Delhi and Rajasthan in Indian domestic cricket and is the former bowling coach of Afghanistan and former head coach of Nepal.
Former wicketkeeper-batter, Kiran More started his cricket academy in the late 1990s. He also served as the chairman of the national selection committee from 2002 to 2006. MS Dhoni made his India debut during More's stint as chief selector.
Anil Kumble made his Test debut in the same match Tendulkar scored his first international hundred. He claimed three wickets in the game. The leg-spin legend holds the record for having claimed the most wickets by an Indian bowler in international cricket - 956.
Former leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani made a sensational Test debut, claiming 16 wickets against West Indies in Chennai in 1988. He ended up playing only 17 Tests and 18 ODIs. He was named as a national selector in 2008. Hirwani is among the former cricketers roped in by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for their Vision 2028 project.
