India vs Australia 2019: Mayank Markande excited at the prospect of MS Dhoni keeping wickets to him
What's the story?
Punjab's Mayank Markande has been selected for the two-match T20 series against Australia which is set to take place later this month. Having been selected in the Indian team within a year of his first-class debut, the young leg-spinner is now relishing the prospect of having MS Dhoni keep wickets to him.
The background
Bathinda born Markande initially started out as a fast bowler with very efficient slower deliveries. However, his coach felt his talents could be put to better use as a leg-spinner, transforming the youngster into an exciting prospect.
As a 16-year-old, Markande was impressive in his outing in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2013-14 where he picked up 29 wickets in 7 matches. He was also one of the breakthrough bowlers for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy which helped him secure a 20-lakh IPL contract with Mumbai Indians.
The leggie wasted no time in establishing himself in the MI team as his first IPL wicket was that of MS Dhoni.
The details
Markande opened up about the experience he gained as a player with the Mumbai Indians franchise. Speaking about Rohit Sharma's influence on him, Mayank said, "Sharing the Indian dressing room with Rohit Sharma will be special. He had motivated me a lot during the IPL. I always kept talking to him. He is a legend of the game now so I always try to learn as much as possible from him".
However, Markande is most excited about the prospect of MS Dhoni keeping wickets to him. “As for now I am not even thinking about getting in the playing XI. But if I do then having MS Dhoni keep for me will be special,” he added.
What's next?
Dhoni has been instrumental in the success of the spinners who have made their debut for India in recent times. Naturally, Markande is also excited about this proposition which could make him an India regular in the future.
