India and Australia have clashed in 12 ODI World Cup matches in nine editions of the quadrennial tournament. Australia have held the edge in this World Cup rivalry with a 75% win record. The five-time world champions have registered eight wins next to India’s four in India vs Australia World Cup ODI matches.
The two teams first met in on June 13 in 1983 in India’s victorious 1983 World Cup tournament. They played two games in that particular edition in England. Although India lost to Australia by a heavy margin of 162 runs in the league stage, Kapil Dev’s men bounced back in the second league game with a 118-run win in Chelmsford.
The two teams played their first match in the 1987 World Cup in the erstwhile Madras (now called Chennai) on October 9, 1987. Australia narrowly won by 1 run while defending 270 on a sluggish track.courtesy Craig McDermott’s 4/56.
India got the better of the Aussies when they again met in the second league game in Delhi. The likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Dilip Vengsarkar and Mohammad Azharuddin notched half-centuries as India posted 289 for 6 after 50 overs. Azharuddin and left-arm spinner Maninder Singh picked three wickets each to fold up the Australian innings for 233 in 49 overs.
Australia registered a nail-biting 1-run win over India for the second time in the ICC Cricket ODI World Cup and it was done in their own back yard in Brisbane when they co-hosted the 1992 World Cup event along with New Zealand. Since then, Australia recorded a five-match unbeaten streak against India, including the drubbing in the 2003 World Cup final.
India and Australia have played once only in a World Cup final in the 2003 edition in Johannesburg. Australia rode on the thunderous show of captain Ricky Pontig (140*) in the company of Damien Martyn (88) to propel to a mammoth score of 359/2. India were skittled out for a meagre 234 in the second innings with Australia defending their title with a comprehensive 125-run win.
India avenged the 2003 World Cup win eight years later when the two teams met in the quarterfinal of the 2011 World Cup at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. While chasing a moderate target of 260, the Men in Blue were reduced at 187 for 5 before Yuvraj Singh (57*) and Suresh Raina (34*) combined forces to go past the finishing line with ease. This was India’s first win against Australia in World Cup since 1987.
Australia knocked out India from the 2015 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the second semi-final. India won the latest meeting between the two sides in the 2019 World Cup at The Oval in London.
