What’s the story?

Another bit of history was created during the day-night Test between India and Bangladesh when the visitors had to field two concussion substitutes on the first day itself. While Liton Das was replaced by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam was brought on in place of Nayeem Hasan.

In case you didn’t know...

The ICC had recently put forth a new regulation wherein players could be substituted when they faced concussion issues while batting. During the 2019 Ashes, Steve Smith became the first batsman to be replaced when Marnus Labuschagne came on in his stead.

The heart of the matter

Both Liton and Nayeem were subjected to some hostile bowling from Mohammed Shami in the 1st innings of the day-night Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. While the wicket-keeper copped a blow flush on the forehead, the spinner was hit near the ear, meaning that both the Bangladesh players were left dazed.

Even though Liton continued and hit a few boundaries after being struck on the helmet, he was eventually withdrawn once he started showing symptoms of being concussed.

As for Nayeem, he was dismissed in the first innings before the Bangladesh support staff decided that he wasn’t fit enough to take the field for the visitors’ bowling essay.

For the first time since concussion substitutes have been introduced, two players from the same team have been replaced in the same innings.

Moreover, because Mehidy came in for Liton, he would be unable to bowl throughout the Test match, considering the latter was earmarked to play as the wicket-keeper for Bangladesh.

What’s next?

India skittled out Bangladesh for a paltry total of 106 and look on course to inflict another chastening defeat on the visitors. However, the Tigers jolted the hosts’ batting early when Al-Amin Hossain got rid of Mayank Agarwal.
