India vs England 2016 3rd Test Day 2 Stats: R Ashwin joins Daniel Vettori in an elite list, Ajinkya Rahane's poor form continues

R Ashwin rescued India from a tricky position

India finished Day 2 of the Mohali Test at 271 for 6, trailing England by 12 runs in what proved to an absorbing contest between bat and ball during the course of the day on Sunday.Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli notched up half-centuries, but the visitors struck at regular intervals to ensure India didn’t run away with the advantage.

From 148 for 2 at Tea, India were reduced to 204 for 6 before Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja put on an invaluable stand of 67 runs to ensure that their side did not roll over for a small total.

Here are the numbers from the day:

2- Ravichandran Ashwin became only the second spinner to notch up 500 runs with the bat and take 50 wickets with the ball in a single calendar year. Daniel Vettori of New Zealand is the only other spinner to achieve the feat. He is also the second Indian cricketer to achieve that feat after Kapil Dev, who did it twice.

12.60- Ajinkya Rahane’s batting average in this series. The right-hander has made 63 runs in 5 innings with a best score of  26 in the three matches so far.

7-Cheteshwar Pujara’s 51 on Sunday was his 7th 50+ plus score in 2016 in 13 innings. He already has two centuries in this series.

12-Karun Nair became only the 12 th  Indian cricketer to be dismissed run-out in his debut Test match. The last Indian to get out in such a manner in his first Test was Anil Kumble, also against England in Manchester in 1990.

3-Sunday was just the third instance in his career that Parthiv Patel had opened the batting for India. In the earlier two matches, he made a duck and 69, while on Sunday, he made a stroke-filled 42.

1-Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten stand of 67 runs on Sunday was their first 50+ partnership in Test cricket. At the end of the Day’s play, the former was unbeaten on 57, while the latter on 31.

1-Kohli’s 62 on Sunday also made him the highest run-getter across all formats in 2016. He now has 2339 runs in 2016, 39 ahead of Joe Root who has 2300 runs in this calendar year.

53.33- Kohli’s strike-rate after his first 30 balls on Sunday. He was unbeaten on 16 at that stage. In the second innings of the Vizag Test, Kohli’s strike-rate was 110 after his first 30 balls.
