Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane put India in command

India stamped their authority over New Zealand in the third Test at Indore after they declared their first innings at 557/5. Starting the day on 267/3, the Indian batsmen piled on the runs as the hosts are looking to wrap up the series 3-0. 

Overnight batsmen Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane batted throughout the first two sessions and reached their personal landmarks. Kohli scored his second Test 200 before getting out for 211 while Rahane missed out on his maiden double ton by just 12 runs. Rohit Sharma continued his good form in the series by scoring an unbeaten 51.  

New Zealand saw off the 9 overs on 9 days with ease as they ended day 2 on 28/0.

1 – This is India’s first 400+ score in Tests at home since Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement

2 – This is the second time that India’s no. 4 and no. 5 scored a 150 in the same innings. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman were the first pair to do so when they scored 241* and 178 respectively against Australia at Sydney in 2004. 

6 – Virat Kohli becomes the sixth Indian batsman to score two Test double hundreds in the same year

50.83 – Ajinkya Rahane’s batting average in Tests, the highest among all the members of the current team

188 – This is Ajinkya Rahane’s highest Test score and it is also the fourth-highest score by an Indian batsman batting at no.5

211 – This is Virat Kohli’s highest score in Tests and also the second-highest Test score by a captain against New Zealand only behind Sachin Tendulkar.

365 – The partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli is the fifth best partnership by Indian batsmen in Tests. It is also India’s highest partnership for the fourth wicket in Tests and the third highest partnership by any batting pair against New Zealand in Tests

Ajinkya Rahane is the only Indian batsman to score at least 90 runs in an innings in all the Test series (barring his debut series in which he played only one match) since making his Test debut.
