India vs New Zealand, Day 4 Stats: Wriddhiman Saha creates unique record, Luke Ronchi becomes Ravindra Jadeja's bunny
India registered an emphatic 178-run win over New Zealand in the second Test in Kolkata to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and also climb back to the top of the World rankings in Test cricket.
It was a combined bowling effort from the bowling unit with everyone chipping in with scalps at regular intervals that just didn’t allow the visitors to get any breathing space.
There were some significant moments statistically during the day. Here are some of the numbers from the day’s play:
1-Wriddhiman Saha became the first ever cricketer to remain unbeaten on a score between 50 & 60 in both innings of a Test match. He made 54 not out in the first innings and 58 not out in the second.
14- Ross Taylor's lbw dismissal in the second innings on Day Four was 14th of this game, which is now a record for the most number of lbw’s in a Test match in India. The previous highest was 13, that happened in the Ahmedabad Test of 1996, when India beat South Africa by 64 runs.
4-New Zealand’s Tom Latham became only the fourth overseas opener to score a half-century in the final innings of a Test at the Eden Gardens. He was dismissed for a fine 148-ball 74.
1- Latham’s 74 was also the highest score made by an overseas opener in the final innings of a Test at this venue. The previous highest was 67 by Matthew Hayden in 2001.
4- Saha became only the fourth Indian wicket-keeper to register consecutive half-centuries in a Test match. MS Dhoni, Farookh Engineer and Dilawar Hussain are the others.
233-233 is the highest score ever chased at the Eden Gardens in the final innings. It was done by England in 1961-62.
6-Matt Henry became the sixth New Zealand bowler to pick 6 or more wickets in a Test match in India. The last bowler to achieve the feat was Daryll Tuffey in Mohali in 2003.
2-In his first four home Tests, Mohammad Shami has picked up 18 wickets, which is only second to Ishant Sharma, who took 21 wickets in his first four Test matches at home.
4-Today was the fourth time in as many as innings in this tour that Ravindra Jadeja has dismissed Luke Ronchi.
13-India’s win in Kolkata stretches their victorious home run to 13. Their record is 20 Tests between 1977 and 1980.
26-Number of wickets picked by fast bowlers during this Test, which is the second highest number of scalps taken by the quicks at this venue. During the 1999 India vs Pakistan Test here, 30 wickets fell to the pacers.
12- The win in Kolkata on Monday was the 12th successive Test, starting from the second Test against Sri Lanka last year, where Virat Kohli has remained unbeaten as a skipper. He has now overtaken MS Dhoni to number 4 in the list. Dhoni was undefeated in 11 consecutive Tests.
1-India became the first team to win their 250th overall Test and their 250th Test at home.
