India vs South Africa Match Prediction: Who will win today's 2024 T20 World Cup final match?
In a way, it's rather fitting that in a T20 World Cup characterized by questionable scheduling and format, two unbeaten teams will face off in the final. India and South Africa may have expressed varying degrees of dominance over the course of the competition, but neither team has been beaten yet.
The final will be played in Barbados on Saturday, June 29, with South Africa having had a few more hours to rest and recover from the semifinal. Moreover, the fact that they brushed Afghanistan side would've given their players a big boost.
India, meanwhile, had to battle it out against England at times, but got the job done by a landslide margin. The Men in Blue have been clinical over the tournament, and although they were run close by a couple of teams, they've been arguably the best side on display.
A final involving India and South Africa is inevitably going to be centered around their history in such matches. Rohit Sharma and Co. are no strangers to heartbreaks, and while Aiden Markram is at the helm of a relatively baggage-free group of quality players, the Proteas have the weight of expectations on them as well.
Can India secure their first T20 World Cup title since the inaugural edition? Or will South Africa hand them another slice of misery?
2024 T20 World Cup: One team all set to break the hoodoo
Reeza Hendricks hasn't been at his best at the top of the order, and India will have an eye on dismissing him early and exposing the strong middle order to some challenging conditions up front. Quinton de Kock loves batting against the Men in Blue, who will need to sort their plans out against the left-hander without an off-spinner in their ranks.
Both teams have been fielding three fast bowlers and three spinners, and that isn't going to change in Barbados. Tabraiz Shamsi isn't in the same league as Kuldeep Yadav, though, and control exerted over the middle overs could be decisive, with both teams having penetrative powerplay bowlers.
Can South Africa's batting, with Hendricks and Aiden Markram not in great nick, stand up to the test against eight overs of Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep? Can the spin hitters, Heinrich Klaasen in particular, get stuck in and be a thorn in India's flesh?
The same questions can be asked of India as well. Virat Kohli hasn't been able to buy a run, while Shivam Dube has been off color throughout the 2024 T20 World Cup. Even Rishabh Pant, who has made a few important contributions, has faded of late.
That said, though, Rohit and Co. have more batting depth, more match-winners in good form, and a better bowling attack. India have been the more convincing team over the course of the tournament, and while knockout games aren't always understanding of such trends, South Africa have barely scraped through on many occasions.
Predicting the outcome of a final is rarely possible with accuracy, and this is one of those times. Based on the information available to us, though, India are the favorites.
Prediction: India to win the 2024 T20 World Cup final.
