What's the story?

Ahead of the third Test against Sri Lanka at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi, Indian opener Murali Vijay faced the media and answered several questions about the nature of the wicket, team combination, opening combination et al.

"Actually, we three are very good friends off the pitch and it makes things much more easier for us. We three have a good rapport off the field and it will help us in the future. We three are in good form as well," Vijay said when asked about how difficult it is for all the three openers to have different partners in different matches.

The details

When asked whether there would be any changes in the team to experiment for the South Africa series, Vijay said, "I don't know about it. Whatever the team management does, we are all equipped and we are all looking to contribute. I don't know how they are are going to play around with the team. It is absolutely their choice and we are all ready to do it for the team".

He also conceded that the wicket looks green as the team are preparing themselves for the South Africa series.

In case you didn't know...

After being forced to shake hands with a win in sight in the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team bounced back strongly and beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 239 runs in the second Test at Nagpur to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.

The third and final match of the series will be played in New Delhi from December 2.

Author's take

It is good to know that the three openers, who are in contention to open the batting for India, share a good rapport as it will help them gel when they take the field.

However, I hope that the team management figures out the right opening combination (Vijay and KL Rahul in my opinion) before they step onto the flight for South Africa as it won't make any sense to play a game of musical chairs with the opener's slot in an important series like that.
