India women go down to England by 13 runs after brilliant Charlotte Edwards ton

England skipper Charlotte Edwards scored an unbeaten 108 out of her team’s total of 214

Scarborough (England) – India women suffered a dramatic batting collapse losing five wickets for 30 runs and went down by 13 runs to England women in the second ODI for their second consecutive loss in the ICC Women's Championship here Saturday.

Chasing a target of 214, the Indian team put up a close fight but were all out for 201 runs in 48.4 overs at the North Marine Road Ground.

Smriti Mandhana (32) kept the scoreboard ticking up the order but the team lost wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 97 for four. Skipper Mithali Raj also contributed with a patient 30 but couldn't arrest the slide.

Harmanpreet Kaur (43) and Vellaswamy Vanitha (23) led the fightback with their 41-run stand for the fifth wicket. Harmanpreet's 62-ball innings was studded with five fours and at a time when it looked that her partnership with Vanitha was blossoming, Anya Shrubsole (2/44) struck to get rid of Vanitha and reduce India to 138/5.

Harmanpreet and veteran all-rounder Jhulan Goswami (18) offered brief resistance with their 33-run stand for the sixth wicket. But all hopes faded away after Jenny Gunn (4/23) took a good catch of her own bowling to get rid of Goswami to trigger a batting collapse as India lost the last five wickets for 30 runs.

Earlier, England riding on a fine century by skipper and opening batter Charlotte Edwards made 214 for nine in 50 overs.

Edwards's 145-ball 108, that had 11 fours, was the only highlight of the England innings as Indian bowlers put up an impressive show. Goswami picked up three for 30 while Rajeshwari Gaekwad got four for 42.
