Indian cricketers reminisce 2011 world cup win on Twitter

“Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lift the World Cup after 28 years!”  It has been six years and those words spoken by Ravi Shastri continue to be fresh in the mind of every Indian cricket team supporter.

2 April 2011. A day which no Indian cricket team member or fan would ever forget. As MS Dhoni hit Nuwan Kulasekara for a six over long off, India had finally reclaimed the world cup after 28 long years.

However, it was not an easy win for the Men in Blue.

Sri Lanka had won the toss and opted to bat first in the final. Riding on Mahela Jayawardene’s century, they posted a highly respectable total of 274-6 in their 50 overs.

During the chase, the Indian side found themselves in deep trouble after losing openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar early on.

However, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli led the revival by putting on an 83 run stand for the 3rd wicket. After Kohli’s dismissal, Dhoni, who promoted himself up the order ahead of in-form Yuvraj Singh took the responsibility on his shoulder and played a match-winning knock of 91 in 79 deliveries to help India create history.

As the entire nation celebrates the six year anniversary of the memorable win at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, the Indian cricketers took to social media platform Twitter to reminisce the victory.
