Australian batsman David Hussey has been signed by the Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for Dwayne Bravo who was ruled out for the rest of the tournament after injuring his shoulder while attempting to take a catch in Chennai’s inaugural match against Kings XI Punjab.

Hussey took to social-networking site Twitter to announce that a he has received some big news:

The news was later confirmed by CSK, via their Twitter acocunt:

It was a little surprising to see CSK sign Hussey, as he was on the commentary panel during the on-going IPL season. He is the second player to be called up by a team while doing his commentary duties in the IPL. The first one was Mark Boucher in 2011, who was then called up by the Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Australian batsman couldn’t hide his delight at getting an opportunity to play in the IPL. Speaking to Morning Glory, he said: “I’ve been lucky enough to be over here commentating on the IPL and got called in to replace him as part of the Chennai Super Kings.”

“I haven’t actually picked up a cricket bat or anything so I think come tomorrow I’ll fly into Delhi and face some balls in the nets,” he further added.

Hussey had previously represented the Kolkata Knight Riders before he was signed by the Kings XI Punjab for a massive amount of US$1.4 million, making him the second most expensive overseas player after Mahela Jayawardene.

In six seasons of the IPL, the 36-year-old has scored 1206 runs at an average of 25.65 and a strike rate of 122.93. His performances were below par in the 2013 edition, which was perhaps the main reason he wasn’t picked by any franchise at the auction this year.

His bowling has been handy every once in a while, but he did not pick up a single wicket in last season’s tournament despite bowling a total of 11 overs.

David Hussey had a reasonably good season in the Big Bash League earlier this year, scoring 149 runs at 49.67 in 7 matches. He will be looking forward to do more of the same for the Indian Cements-owned franchise.
