Glenn Maxwell: One of a kind genius?
Ever since Glenn Maxwell broke into the Australian side, his ability to strike the ball at will has been admired by many. At that point of time, people thought of Maxwell as a typical aggressive batsman who wanted to strike every ball out of the park. But the recent showings of Maxwell in the IPL and the World T20 has sent a message to all cricket fans.
Maxwell has sent shivers down bowlers by sending almost every delivery in his sight flying over the boundary. His mere arm strength and innovation has won the Kings XI 2 games from hopeless positions.
Glenn Maxwell has busted his critics with some brilliant showings in recent times. He has not only been aggressive, but has also used the full wagon wheel with his innovation and technique. He has made use of all areas of his bat to innovate and create shots out of nowhere.
Maxwell’s surprising ability to hit almost any ball thrown at him to the boundary has created a barrier to the bowlers. In the 3rd IPL Match: CSK vs KXIP, Glenn Maxwell single handedly helped the Kings XI chase down a monster total of 205 set up by the Chennai Super Kings. Wherever the bowlers tried to bowl, however Dhoni shuffled his field, Maxwell created new shots and put up with the pressure of the run rate with ease. These recent showings have revolutionized the term genius in cricket.
Taking a look at Glenn Maxwell, he doesn’t stick to a single technique of batting. He just looks to hit every ball to the boundary. Even though a regular cricket enthusiast would look at Maxwell as another hit-out or get out batsman, in the past few games, Maxwell has showed everyone what he can do with aggression and innovation combined. Although aggression is a factor in Maxwell, innovation is the key which helps him bat at such a brilliant strike rate.
We’ve seen Kevin Pietersen’s switch hit, Dilshan’s Dilscoop and Sachin/Sehwag’s upper cut, but this guy seems to be a mixture of all these innovative shots! With his unpredictable switch hits and reverse sweeps, he manipulates the field so well and clearly keeps an added pressure on any opponent captain while setting a field.
Although one wouldn’t compare Maxwell with such legendary players as of yet, we could see that he has a spark of genius in him which proves to be as equal a threat to an opposition as any of these legends. Maxwell is a genius too. His ability to create and innovate shots in that short interval when a bowler is about to pitch the ball, puts him as a prospect of the future. Australia has set a base and produced many legendary batsmen. But are they looking at a “one of a kind” modern day genius who can turn any game around?
Have the Australians found the mystery X-Factor of their team who could turn out as legendary as any of their previous batting legends? We’ll have to wait and watch as this young prospect, blossoms into a fear factor.
