There was already plenty at stake in the contest between the Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders in Kanpur. Adding to the intrigue, a special guest could also be spotted experiencing cricket for the first time in India.

NDTV Sports reported Apple CEO Tim Cook attending the captivating encounter on the behest of IPL Governing Council Chairman Rajiv Shukla. The 55-year old was on a four-day trip to India where he would meet several administrators, businessmen and celebrities in the country.

Shukla, who is incidentally from the city of Kanpur, has been in charge of the cash-rich league from 2013. He revealed, “I had personally invited Cook to watch an IPL match and I am glad that he has accepted my invitation.”

It was a low scoring affair with the Lions shredding a feeble KKR batting lineup on a greenish pitch. Riding on Dwayne Smith’s surprising spell and skipper Suresh Raina’s half-century, Gujarat emerged comfortable victors in the end.

Tim Cook was understandably fascinated by the electric atmosphere in the Green Park Stadium. Speaking to the host broadcaster, the US citizen enthused, “It is incredible. I am already hooked on to it.”

Seated alongside Shukla and actor Sanjay Dutt who was recently released from prison, Cook quipped, “It is tough to watch the game in this heat but I have never felt anything like this before. I see how important cricket is, how important sport is.”

Also a member of the Congress Party, Shukla affirmed, “It is a great achievement for us that he has come all the way to watch the game. We are using his (Apple's) technology even in our domestic cricket.”

After visiting the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai, Cook was present in a private party organized by Shah Rukh Khan. The popular actor is also the principal owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Previously serving as the Chief Operating Officer of the multi-national company, Cook noted, “India is an unparalleled country compared to any other country. I liked the culture and learned a lot. We are honored to be here.”

Currently in its ninth season, the IPL is one of the most popular and lucrative sports leagues in the world.
