IPL 2016: Highest/Most Run-Scorers, Leading Wicket-Takers after Gujarat Lions vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Qualifier-2

Sunrisers Hyderabad rides home on David Warner’s heroics

The chase of the Orange Cap is most likely over. Virat Kohli leads the chart with over 919 runs at an average of 83.54; he has the best batting average of IPL 2016. David Warner is in the second spot ahead of AB de Villiers with the most half-centuries in IPL. He has 31 fifties and is on equal footing with Gautam Gambhir in the overall standings in IPL.

The openers from Sunrisers Hyderabad were playing their A-game for most of the tournament. Warner is flying high in the chart with Shikar Dhawan taking the seventh place. Suresh Raina is the only player from the Gujarat side to make the top-10 chart and yet is the all-time leading run-scorer of the Indian Premier League.

The Purple Cap chase is a much more interesting with three players battling it out. Currently, Bhuvneshwar Kumar holds the Purple Cap with 23 wickets with most of them coming in the final over of the match. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also holds another record with the most dot balls in IPL 9 while GL's Praveen Kumar has the most dot balls in all nine seasons combined.

Shane Watson and Yuzvendra Chahal from Royal Challengers Bangalore follow him with 20 wickets each. The final game will be fascinating for the Purple Cap can change hands multiple times.

Dhawal Kulkarni has been the strike bowler for the Gujarat Lions with eighteen wickets to his name at an average of 20.22. He is at number four on the top wicket-takers chart while Dwayne Bravo is in the sixth place with seventeen wickets.

Royal Challengers Bangalore won Qualifier-1 to move into the finals. We had an all-important do-or-die game on 27 May 2016 at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi and is the last stop before the finals. Gujarat Lions battled Sunrisers Hyderabad to clinch a spot in the final, which is on 29 May 2016.

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and chose to field first.

Gujarat Lions Playing XI:

Shikhar Dhawan, David Warner(C), Moises Henriques, Yuvraj Singh, Deepak Hooda, Naman Ojha(WK), Ben Cutting, Bipul Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Barinder Sran, Trent Boult.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Playing XI:

Aaron Finch, Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina(C), Dinesh Karthik(WK), Dwayne Smith, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Eklavya Dwivedi, Praveen Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shivil Kaushik.

Mustafizur  took sixteen wickets with an economy of 6.73 and is crucial for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was replaced by Trent Boult whose last match was in January this year.

Dwivedi played a brilliant cameo in the last game and was promoted to open the innings with Brendon McCullum. It meant that Aaron Finch and Dwayne Smith had to play in the middle order; interesting tactics from the Lions.

The change in the batting order didn’t help Gujarat Lions much as they faltered early on in the innings. Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers took two wickets in the first four overs with Trent Boult removing Gujarat Lions captain Suresh Raina for just one run. He was involved in the first wicket as well.

Dinesh Karthik and Brendon McCullum held their ground and put 44 runs for the fourth wicket. Dinesh Karthik was run out for 26 runs; interestingly, Trent Boult was involved in that run-out as well. He had a great start to his IPL 9 debut.

Soon after, Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith fell in quick succession. Aaron Finch had a partnership of 51 runs with Ravindra Jadeja and was the standout performer for the Lions. He scored a well-paced fifty to propel Gujarat’s score to 162 and is just outside the top run-scorers chart.

Sunrisers Hyderabad lost Shikhar Dhawan for a nought. Dwayne Smith made only one run with the bat in the first innings earlier whereas with the ball, he dismissed Moises Henriques off his first ball.

SRH captain David Warner scored yet another half-century and became the fourth batsman to cross the 700-run mark in a single IPL season.

Yuvraj Singh was not amongst the runs in this game and Ben Cutting had to depart to a controversial decision. Naman Ojha and Deepak Hooda departed for single digit figures as well. The table had just turned around for SRH. But Bipul Sharma played a crucial knock in the death overs with David Warner and is the only player other than the Australian to get past the 20-run mark. David Warner scored an unbeaten 93 to guide Sunrisers Hyderabad to the final, which was his highest score of IPL 9.
