IPL 2016 - Stats: Clinical Mumbai Indians post a comprehensive victory over RCB

Krunal Pandya‘s tight spell was instrumental in restricting a power-packed batting unit

It was a test of character for Mumbai Indians whether they could rebound from a humiliating loss against the Sunrisers. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore had brought their campaign back on track by clinching a humdinger against Kings XI Punjab by the narrowest of margins.

Virat Kohli’s bad luck with the toss continued as Mumbai opted to chase. The new-ball combination of Southee/McClenagahan delivered some early blows to pile the pressure on the hosts. Riding on KL Rahul’s gritty knock, RCB reached a decent total.

Mumbai Indians began their pursuit by adopting a cautious approach. Despite an earnest attempt by the RCB bowlers, Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler joined hands and made mincemeat of the chase.

Let us take a look at the most interesting statistics from the captivating contest.

1 – IPL matches won by the Royal Challengers against Mumbai Indians at home. They have lost six games too them which is their worst record against any team at the venue.

1 – Single-digit scores for Kohli in 18 T20 innings. His last such score came against Bangladesh in the opening match of the Asia Cup.

2 – Totals lesser than RCB’s 151 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium by a batting lineup who had lost five wickets or fewer from the 20 overs. Incidentally, the lowest total at the venue was also by the home team against MI in 2011.

2 – Left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya became only the second bowler to dismiss AB de Villiers twice in the same IPL season. The first one to do so was also a left-armer, Shadab Jakati in 2011.

6 – Consecutive 30-plus scores for KL Rahul in this IPL. On the contrary, the right-hander had only a couple of such scores from his first 20 IPL innings.

7 – Consecutive single-digit scores for Chris Gayle in all T20s since his whirlwind century against England. The burly West Indian batsman has only managed scores of 4,5,4,1,0,7,5.

7 – Krunal Pandya’s economy rate in this season. It is the least among all Mumbai Indians bowlers who have bowled at least 4 overs collectively.

9 – Successive matches in which RCB have scored a total of at least 170 in this IPL. Their perfect record ended today when they could only reach 151.

12 – Total runs added by both RCB opening batsmen. Kohli and Gayle had forgettable outings making it the least productive tally for their team in 14 matches.

15 – Runs given away by Krunal Pandya from his full quota of 4 overs which is the second lowest by a spinner in a completed T20 spell at this venue.

25 – Runs scored by the Royal Challengers from the first six overs. This is the franchise’s third lowest Power Play after the 20 and 24 which they had made against KKR and MI respectively.

58 – Runs plundered by Rohit off Varun Aarun’s bowling from 25 balls in this IPL. However, the speedster finally hit back by scalping the elegant batsman with a short-ball.

64 – Combined runs scored by both teams in the Power Play. It is the joint lowest at this venue in an IPL match after equaling the 2011 match between the same teams.

68 – Rahul’s contribution to his team’s total which is also the highest score of his T20 career overtaking a previous best of 62 in the 2012-13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

400 – Sixes smashed by Pollard in T20s. He became the second batsman to achieve this feat after Gayle.
