IPL 2016 Stats: Parthiv Patel powers Mumbai Indians to clinical win over Kings XI Punjab

Mumbai Indians backed up a solid batting effort with a terrific day in the field

This was a contest between two teams who wanted to get their campaign back on track. Arriving into Mohali, both Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab were at the bottom half of the table in the 2016 edition of the IPL.

Keeping with the prevailing trend, Kings XI skipper David Miller won the toss and decided to chase. He made a huge change by replacing countryman Kyle Abbott with Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson while Mumbai went in unchanged.

Despite losing their skipper Rohit Sharma in just the second ball of the match, the visitors rode on a 137-run partnership between Parthiv Patel and Ambati Rayudu to post a healthy total. Then, Jasprit Bumrah and Tim Southee struck regularly to ensure that the Mumbai Indians coasted to a comprehensive win.

Let us take at the most interesting statistics from the engrossing encounter at the PCA Stadium.

2 – Instances where Glenn Maxwell has managed to get to double-figures in this IPL. With both of those scores coming while chasing, his poor form has hurt Kings XI to a great extent.

2 – Half-centuries scored by Maxwell from 33 innings in all IPL matches in India. When the tournament was briefly held in UAE, the aggressive batsman had smashed 3 fifties out of 5 innings.

4 – Consecutive matches lost by Kings XI against the Mumbai Indians in Mohali. Their overall record against Mumbai is also pretty dire with only three wins as against seven losses at the venue.

4 – Single-digit scores for Rohit when batting first in this IPL season. On the contrary, the right-hander has three fifties while chasing.

6 – Number of times that Kings XI Punjab has successfully chased targets of 190 plus. It is the most by any team in the league followed by Rajasthan Royals with three such chases.

7 – The run-rate for Kings XI during the Power Play. In this IPL, only Delhi Daredevils have a lower scoring rate in the first six overs.

8 – Number of ducks recorded by Rohit across all seasons of the IPL. The elegant opener was dismissed while trying the cut an in-swinger from Sandeep Sharma.

12 – Rounded-off average (12.14) of Mumbai Indians’ opening partnership during seven innings of the IPL, so far. The Rohit-Parthiv combine has yielded the lowest among all teams in the tournament.

17 – T20 half-centuries scored by Parthiv and Rayudu in their respective careers. They have also played a similar number of matches in the format with Patel leading the right-hander by an additional game.

25 – Mumbai Indians managed only 25 runs in the first overs of the match. After Rohit’s early dismissal, Parthiv and Rayudu began to tread cautiously in a bid to resurrect the innings.

83 – Ducks registered by Mumbai Indians throughout the IPL. As a team, they are only one short of Delhi Daredevils who top the ignominious list.

3000 – Rayudu crossed the 3000-barrier in his T20 career when he drove Axar Patel through the cover boundary. He became the 15th Indian batsman to reach the landmark.
