IPL 2017: Why Aaron Finch is not playing for GL in the match against MI

Aaron Finch will not be playing today's match against the Mumbai Indians because his kitbag hasn’t arrived

In its long history, cricket has seen several bizarre incidents, involving players missing matches. Injuries are more often than not the most common one, but on Sunday, we perhaps witnessed the weirdest reason for a player not taking part in a game.

Aaron Finch, who scored a brisk 33 from 19 balls against the Supergiants had to miss the match and the reason because he had lost his kitbag, as informed by the skipper of the franchise Suresh Raina during the toss.

Over the years, we have heard many stories about cricketers missing their matches due to strange reasons like former Windies skipper Jimmy Adams missing an entire series against South Africa due to accidentally cutting his finger using a butter knife while on board a flight, and former England cricketer Ted Dexter missing the 1965-66 Ashes series due to his right leg being crushed by his own car.

However, Finch’s reason takes the cake with some extra icing as well as the cherry on top as this is undoubtedly the strangest and most unfortunate reason why a player has missed a match. However, this kit bag fiasco might go on to cost the Gujarat Lions a match.

Finch was dearly needed to perform in this match as he is a quality T20 batsman and put up a good show with the bat in the previous game. However, Finch’s absence doesn’t completely rule out the Gujarat Lions as they have other quality batsmen in Dwayne Smith, Suresh Raina, Brendon McCullum, and Jason Roy; and with the addition of Andrew Tye who took a brilliant hat-trick last match, Mumbai Indians will have a tough task ahead of them.
