IPL 2017: I think my heart is still with Delhi, says Gautam Gambhir
What’s the story?
Gautam Gambhir is not a man to mince his words and he wears his heart on his sleeve most of the times. However, there is no denying that his opinions matter in the game and hence whenever he speaks out on any issue there are bound to be repercussions.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Gambhir spoke on a host of issues ranging from his IPL experience to the concept of sledging.
Responding to a question which asked him if he wants to win the IPL with his home state Delhi, the left-hander left everyone guessing with his answer.
“I think my heart is still with Delhi. I played for three years for Delhi (Daredevils). Somewhere, deep within my heart, I’d love to finish with Delhi. Though I am the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and would want them to win it for the third time, but since I’m a Delhi boy too, I obviously want Delhi Daredevils to do well as well,” Gambhir was as quoted.
The Details
The out-of-favour Indian opener also went on to speak about the scourge of sledging which rocked the recent India-Australia series and believed that while it was fine being aggressive, one cannot get too personal while on the field.
He also went on the say that it is human nature to get emotional and that is perfectly fine to indulge in a bit of banter especially when the stakes are so high out in the centre, but then personal attacks should not be tolerated.
Gambhir who seldom breaks into a smirk or smile out on the field said that the reason for his intensity is his urge to win at all cost as he wants to return to a happy dressing room.
In case you didn’t know...
Gambhir played for the Delhi Daredevils from 2008-2010 and even captained the franchise. He, however, was snapped up by the Kolkata Knight Riders and was given captaincy of the side. This move yielded dividends as Gambhir led KKR to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.
He is one the best captains in the league and is respected for his tactics and for throwing his weight behind his bowlers.
What's next?
KKR have had an iffy start to their campaign so far and have been jolted with the injury to their star batsman Chris Lynn. Having said this they have enough pedigree in their squad to more than make up for this loss.
Their next assignment is against Kings XI Punjab, a team which is leading the table at the moment.
Author's Take
There is an inherent sense of honesty in whatever Gambhir says and his comment on Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders is just an extension of his personality as there is no filter between his thoughts and words and this is a rare trait in cricketers of the current generation.
However, there should not be any apprehension over his commitment to Kolkata Knight Riders as he is the captain and leader of the side and takes immense pride in his role.
