The Rising Pune Supergiant toppled the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 12 runs courtesy fine bowling performances from Ben Stokes and Jaydev Unadkat. Stokes also scored a breezy 39(25) with the bat. Unadkat continued his good form with the ball by claiming a fifer that also included a hat-trick.
Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, the Sunrisers restricted the Supergiant to a score of 148/8. However, they couldn’t chase it down and ultimately fell short by 12 runs.
Now, let us have a look at how the players fared in the match.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Siddharth Kaul – 9
Siddharth Kaul produced his best ever IPL bowling figures today as he claimed 4-29 in his four overs. Kaul was superb from the outset showing good pace and bounce in his bowling. He got the ‘Big Fish’ – Steven Smith – when the latter offered a simple catch to Bipul Sharma. He then came back at the death to claim the wickets of Daniel Christian, MS Dhoni and Shardul Thakur and hence restricted Pune to a paltry total of 148/8 in their 20 overs.
Rashid Khan – 8
The teenage Afghan sensation bowled another superb spell today as he claimed figures of 1-18 in his four overs. The solitary wicket that he claimed was that of Pune’s big hitting all-rounder Ben Stokes who looked in ominous form.
David Warner – 7
Warner started off slowly but picked up the pace later on in his innings and fell 10 runs short of a deserved half-century. He hit some superb boundaries and a well-timed six in his innings of 40(34).
Yuvraj Singh – 7
Yuvraj compiled a calm 47(43) today and looked to take his team home safely after Warner’s early dismissal. He hit four sweetly timed boundaries and two monstrous sixes in his innings. However, his stay was cut short by Jaydev Unadkat when he gave away a simple catch to Rahul Tripathi.
Bipul Sharma – 6
Although he went for 39 runs in his 4 overs, he picked up the all important wicket of Ajinkya Rahane at a crucial juncture. Moreover, he also ran Rahul Tripathi out cheaply early on in the innings. He also scored 8 runs with the bat but could not get his team over the line.
Shikhar Dhawan – 5
Dhawan started off well scoring 19 runs off just 11 balls. He struck two boundaries and one six in his innings until it was cut short by Stokes who cleaned him up in the 5th over.
Moises Henriques – 4
Henriques did well to finish off Ashish Nehra’s quota of overs after the latter got injured. He bowled 2.5 overs, giving away just 15 runs. However, he couldn’t do much with the bat as he was cleaned up by Imran Tahir for 4.
Naman Ojha – 3
It looked like Ojha would take the Sunrisers across the finishing line when he hit a six in the penultimate over. However, Stokes claimed a superb catch off Unadkat’s bowling to send Ojha back to the dug-out for a score of 9(9).
Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 1
Hyderabad’s bowling star, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, found himself at the receiving end once again as MS Dhoni took him for 19 runs in the last over of his spell. As a result, he ended up with poor bowling figures of 4-0-39-0 and was later dismissed for a golden duck.
Kane Williamson – 1
Williamson fell victim to a superb delivery from Stokes on the very second ball he faced. He edged a full toss bowled by Stokes for four runs off the first ball and then produced an edge to be dismissed for only 4(2).
Ashish Nehra – 1
Nehra couldn’t do much today with the ball as he suffered an injury after bowling just an over that went for 5 runs. He came out to bat as well but remained not out on zero without facing a ball.
Rising Pune Supergiant
Ben Stokes – 9
Stokes once again proved his worth as he scored 39(25) with the bat and later claimed figures of 4-30-3. He struck twice in his first over to remove Dhawan and Williamson and then went on to claim the prized wicket of David Warner who looked all set to take his side home.
Jaydev Unadkat – 9
Unadkat went for 20 runs in his first couple of overs. However, he made a superb comeback in his second spell, claiming 5 wickets for just 10 runs including a hat-trick. He showed superb mastery of the slower ball and used the slow nature of the pitch to full effect.
MS Dhoni – 7
Dhoni provided his team with some much-needed acceleration in the latter overs to propel his side to 148/8 in 20 overs. He smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 19 runs in the penultimate over of the innings that included two huge sixes.
Imran Tahir – 7
Imran Tahir was once again clinical in his performance with the ball today as he finished with tidy bowling figures of 4-24-1. He claimed the all important wicket of Moises Henriques who could have been dangerous with the bat.
Steve Smith – 6
Smith played a very slow innings today, scoring just 34 runs in 39 balls without hitting any boundaries. However, his innings ensured that Pune didn’t lose any more wickets while Stokes hit the big shots at the other end.
Ajinkya Rahane – 6
Rahane started off on a positive note, playing some beautiful shots all around the park. However, he ended up top-edging one straight into the hands of Yuvraj Singh off Bipul Sharma’s bowling. Thus he departed for 22(20).
Daniel Christian – 4
Christian couldn’t do much damage with the bat today as he was dismissed on the very second ball of his stay after hitting a boundary. However, he kept things tight with the ball giving away just 21 runs in his three overs.
Washington Sundar – 4
Sundar bowled pretty well, giving away just 19 runs in his three overs. He kept things tight and didn’t give any room to the batsmen to free their arms.
Manoj Tiwary – 3
Tiwary looked good in his brief stay at the crease but fell victim to a superb throw from David Warner and was dismissed for 9(5).
Shardul Thakur – 2
Thakur didn’t get an opportunity to contribute much. All he did was bowl a couple of overs for 12 runs and be dismissed for a golden duck while batting.
Rahul Tripathi - 2
Tripathi was once again run out today for a score of just 1(4). He tried to sneak a run after hitting the ball to Bipul Sharma at short fine leg. However, by the time he could make his ground, Bipul had already disturbed the stumps with a superb throw.
