IPL 2017: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Daredevils, Player Ratings

Williamson took his side to what would turn out to be a match-winning total

In what was to be a battle of the two best bowling line-ups, the bowlers went for a few runs. In a high scoring game, both sides managed to put up stellar performances with the bat. After managing to avoid chasing in the last few games, Delhi Daredevils were made to bowl first by a toss of the coin.

Kane Williamson, coming in for his first game, played one of the most pleasing innings ever at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Along with Shikhar Dhawan, the Kiwi managed to propel the home team to a commanding score.

Some lower-order hitting compounded the worries for Zaheer Khan’s side. Getting off to a good start, the visiting side put up a spirited chase only to fall short by 15 runs. Some young talents delivered with the bat, while others failed. The Daredevils were plagued by yet another confusing decision to send Angelo Mathews in to bat ahead of Chris Morris. This decision probably cost them the game.

Here’s a look at player ratings from the match:

Sunrisers Hyderabad

David Warner – 6

The Aussie was dismissed for 4 runs today and yet his side managed to score 191. Despite failing with the bat, his handling of the bowlers and his field placements made life tough for the visiting team. His decision to bowl Yuvraj turned out to be a turning point in the match.

Shikhar Dhawan – 9

The left-handed opener had been slow to start with in earlier matches. Today he got off to a brisker start than usual. However, he really picked up his scoring in the latter part of his innings. He played the sheet anchor role to perfection tonight.

Kane Williamson – 10

The crowd was treated to a stunning performance by a man who had been warming the benches until tonight. Williamson produced an innings of grace and power. The timing was exquisite and the ball kept falling into gaps. He definitely made his case for being included in the team for the rest of the tournament.

Yuvraj Singh – 7

Yuvraj failed with the bat today. Yet he underlined his value to the team with the ball and in the field. He managed to take out Rishabh Pant for a duck. His presence of mind contributed to the run-out of Karun Nair as well.

Deepak Hooda – 6

Hooda produced some late-order hitting with Henriques to take his team to a winning total. He did not get the opportunity to bowl today but he held on to the catch that Rishabh Pant offered.

Moises Henriques – 5

Henriques was poor with the ball but produced the goods with the bat

Henriques added the finishing touches to the batting performance of the home team. However, he was very ineffective with the ball giving away a lot of runs.

Naman Ojha – N/A

Naman Ojha did not get a chance to bat and hence it would be unfair to rate him.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 9

Bhuvneshwar Kumar went wicketless today which is a surprise in itself. Yet he managed to bring out his yorkers and keep the scoring rate low. Bowling the crucial death overs, he strangled the run chase to ensure his team secured another home victory.

Rashid Khan – 5

Rashid Khan proved to be expensive and ineffective for the second match in a row. His googlies were read and sixes were hit. He will have to regain his form for the future matches in order to stay relevant.

Mohammed Siraj – 9.5

The medium-pacer impressed with his performance in his first outing. He picked up a wicket upfront as well as one in the middle overs to derail the visiting side’s chase. He will be an interesting prospect to watch out for in the future matches.

Siddharth Kaul – 9

Another domestic cricket aspirant who bowled well today in his first outing. He was called on to bowl the final over and produced an interesting mix of slower balls and yorkers. He managed to fox Angelo Mathews in the final over to secure the victory.

Samson got his side off to a decent start

Sanju Samson – 8

Sanju Samson did his reputation no harm by producing yet another innings of substance. He kept the scoring rate high through the first half of the innings. However, his dismissal turned the tide and his team went on to lose.

Sam Billings – 5

Billings was unable to carry on after an explosive start. He provided the initial fillip but fell soon after. He will have to improve his consistency and learn to play longer innings.

Karun Nair – 7.5

Karun Nair came into bat at number three today on the back of some poor performances. For the first time in a long time, he began to stroke the ball well from the beginning. His brisk innings kept the Daredevils afloat. His run-out turned out to be an important event.

Rishabh Pant – 2

Much was expected of Rishabh Pant today. A blistering innings from him would have decisively tilted the match in his team’s favour. However, he was dismissed off the very first ball that he faced.

Shreyas Iyer – 9.5

Shreyas Iyer was in spectacular touch tonight. His brisk 50 took the team close to the total but it was not enough to take them over the line. His innings was the bedrock of the run chase, and with more support, his team might have won.

Angelo Mathews – 5.5

Angelo Mathews gave away a lot of runs when he bowled. When he came out to bat, he consumed a lot of deliveries initially. This came back to bite his team as they were left with too much to do in the final over.

Chris Morris – 10

Morris was once again the pick of the Delhi bowlers

Morris was the most effective bowler on show tonight. He picked up all four wickets to fall and proved why he is one of the best bowlers in the business. Unfortunately, he did not get to bat and the decision to keep him in the shed might have cost his team the game.

Jayant Yadav – 7

Yadav was asked to open the bowling in a role that the Delhi Daredevils have been using frequently. He managed to turn in two decent overs without going for too many runs.

Pat Cummins – 6

Cummins bowled with extreme pace today touching 150kph on a couple of occasions. Yet he was unable to pick up any wickets.

Zaheer Khan – 6

The wily ex-India paceman could not weave his magic tonight. He failed to pick up wickets although he did not go for too many runs. His expensive final over titled the match in the home team’s favour.

Amit Mishra – 2

The leg-spinner was extremely ineffective tonight, going for plenty of runs. Contrary to his performance so far in the tournament, he was unable to pick wickets or keep the scoring down.
