What’s the story?

Delhi Police have arrested three men for placing illegal bets during the ongoing Indian Premier League. This is not an isolated incident as authorities generally crack down on any such nefarious activities during the league.

"We arrested the three on Saturday while they were betting during the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils match," Youdhbir Singh, a senior police officer in Delhi, was as quoted by news agency AFP on Tuesday.

The details

According to the police, the trio was accused of placing bets from a residential quarter in the capital.

The police further added that they arrested the men whey were placing bets during the match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils.

They also had eleven mobile phones, a laptop, a television set and a digital channel receiver in their possession.

In case you didn’t know…

Betting is illegal in India, but during the months of the IPL, it takes the form of a huge fragmented industry all over the country.

It has to be also mentioned here that police have already busted other organised syndicates in Hyderabad and West Bengal, all this in the first couple of weeks into the IPL.

What’s next?

Considering the size of the country and considering the many betting syndicated which mushroom during these two months, the onus is with the police in different states to keep their ears close to the ground and be more vigilant about any suspected activities taking place around the vicinity.

Author’s take

While the league has always been tainted with controversial reports around fixing and betting, the authorities should be cautious to keep the players and the officials out of this loop by educating them about the different ways and means bookies tend to approach them.

Also, the players should themselves be aware of the heavy sanctions which might be slapped on them should they stray awry!
