IPL 2018, DD vs CSK: Last-over thumping of Chennai is SK Turning Point of the match between Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Superkings
In a result that left many surprised, the Delhi Daredevils pulled over over the Chennai Super Kings with a solid 34-run victory over them at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Friday (May 19).
This result holds no consequence over the fortunes of DD in the tournament, though, as they are already out of contention with respect to making the playoffs this year.
However, they did stop CSK from reaching the top of the table and did it in some style. After being put in to bat by MS Dhoni, the hosts scored 162 for the loss of five wickets in their quota of 20 overs.
At one point, it seemed as though CSK would cruise through the chase to clinch their ninth victory of the season. However, a spirited display of bowling from Shreyas Iyer's team saw the Men in Yellow crumble to a meagre total of 128-6 at the end of it all.
The SK Turning Point of the game came in the first innings though, when the last over bowled by Dwayne Bravo went for as many as 26 runs.
The over helped DD cascade to a fighting total, helping them end their innings on a positive note.
The duo of Vijay Shankar and Harshal Patel took the Trinidadian to the cleaners, dispatching him for four sixes in the over. Patel was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance on the day.
Bravo, who is usually so reliable at the death, just couldn't get it right against the home side and ended up with uncharacteristic figures of none for 52 in his quota of four overs.
"We were craving for this victory, and coming against one of the best teams is satisfying. All departments did well and lived up to the expectations.
It wasn't easy to bat on this wicket, and Patel coming at No. 7 in that last over was amazing. That performance was not expected and that just goes to show what he is here for.
That last over played a major role in getting us to 162," said Iyer, asserting the importance of that powerful 20th over in the context of the game.
While this win changes nothing in terms of Delhi's campaign in the season, it will still give them confidence going into their last game this year, which will be against the defending champions on Sunday (May 20).
Chennai, on the other hand, will take on the Kings XI Punjab in the last league match of the tournament. They have already qualified for the playoffs, but certainly, have some issues to solve before they can feel confident ahead of the major matches.
They must also look to secure a top-two finish after the league stage, so as to get an additional life in the playoffs, in case something goes wrong.
